Via Vittorio Veneto: Finding something at night in the summer

In the summers, Lucca is a very beautiful and romantic city abound with tourists. But at night, during the week the locals come to the gelaterias and cafes on Via Vittorio Veneto and (roughly) Via Garabaldi. There are many gelaterias and cafes open late here.

A good spot would be to get a table outside at "Old City" (whose owners speak English - the wife is a native English speaker). You can watch the locals talking about the day and even listen to the concerts at the Piazza Napoleone for free - though you can't hope to see them.

There are many people on these streets late, and yes, it helps to speak Italian, not many of the locals can get by in English and like any people of a small/ medium sized city, they can be cliquish.

On the weekends, the kiddies come out (if there is a concert - you'll see more adults) and most Luccans are living it up at the beach in Viareggio.

I really cannot comment on the winters here.

Climbing the Walls from the slope in front of the Veneta (see in the other nightlife tips) there is the only discobar in old town.
During the cold season there are a dancing room and a room with tables; in spring and summer the people stays in the terrace on the rampart behind the building.

If you want to have a good beer in a pub-like atmosphere you have to go to the Golde Fox.
Furnished with real old english wooden , it's located just outside the Walls, you can find it easily going out from Porta San Pietro and going towards the train station.
Sometimes live rock music is played by young local band.

In summer Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is a good spot for having relax without the mess of music bars of Piazza Grande area.
Many cafes have tables outside and the evenings there are really relaxing. Sometimes jazz or blues music is played by local bands in the center of the anphitheatre.

Not really a bar but an ice cream shop. It's the most famous in Lucca and ice creams here is very good (even if a little bit more expensive than in other places).
Nearabout here are two bars outside which a lot of people come in summer. Maybe the most receptive spot for youth in Lucca.

A nice place just next to San Martino Cathedral. There are tables outside for the warm period, but people usually preferes to stand and talk scattered nearabout.
Music is played inside, but just for accompaniment.

Every Summer, usually from the end of June till the end of July, the city council organizes a series of concert in the old town (usually about ten).
The most used square in this activity it's Piazza Grande, but sometimes even Piazza dell'Anfiteatro or Piazza San Martino have been used.
The music usually played it's pop and pop-rock and many stars come every year to play in this festival: The Eagles, Mark Knopfler, Black Eyed Peas, Elton John, Dido, Alanis Morrisette, The Cranberries, Jamiroquai and many more have passed through our squares in the last five years.

In the modern city part there should be something like nightlife events, yes. But I don't think it's there in the older walled part of town.
