Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, Lucca
Piazza Anfiteatro (Piazza of the Amphitheatre) was built on the site of an original amphitheatre from 1st or the 2nd century (outside the Roman city walls). It is another ‘must-see' in Lucca. Some original Roman elements remain, particularly within the outer walls. This ancient site constitutes one of the most characteristic and original monuments of the city. Beginning in the Middle Ages, houses were built over the ruins and it was employed as a jail one period
A circiut of mediaeval buildings on th site of the former roman ampitheatre - arches and columns can still be seen embedded in some houses - especially on the north side of the outer walls. Good lunch spot here.
Dating from Roman times, much changed now of course but, the basic layout appears to be the same.
Just the sort of place we love to spend time, not on rainy February mornings though.
Today the Anfiteatro has a number of boutique shops and several cafes, and is a good place to sit, rest your weary feet and people watch.
Piazza Anfiteatro is really nice and colorful place. Enlivened by shops and cafes, it is still at the center of cultural activities, music festivals, and fairs. Very unusual and interesting square.
