Town Walls, Gates and Views
Favorite thing: Montepulciano is a walled hill town, with the main entry gate, being the medieval Porta al Prato, at its northern end. Once inside the walls, it is virtually vehicle free. You can walk up the hill to the centre of town, or wander up and down the narrow streets off the main drag.
Fondest memory: Make sure you take a walk along part of the city walls as the views are spectacular! We wandered along the walls after lunch, and sat for a while, gazing out across the valley, trying to capture the beauty on our inadequate cameras.
This is a stunning part of Tuscany and worth a visit if you are able.

My first view of Montepulciano
Fondest memory: When you are coming from the direction of Siena, there is only one road leading to Montepulciano. From far you can see the town standing on top of one of the gentle green hills of Tuscany. It's a lovely view. On the foreground is the nice church of San Biagio.
- Road Trip
Montepulciano is located in the beautiful region of Tuscany. This part of Italy combines wonderful hilly landscapes with picturesque historic villages, often located on some idyllic hilltop.Of course some Tuscany also has some delicious food and wine to offer. No wonder that this region is so popular. And that is actually its main disadvantages. The region is not 'unspoiled' anymore and during high season it can be very busy. But having said that, it is and will be a lovely spot to visit.
Here are some places I've visited over the years in Tuscany and might give you some suggestions for yourself when visiting this part of Italy:
Borgo a Mozzano
You can read more about all these places on my Tuscany page
Fondest memory: This town has some amazing narrow alleys. Do look around, every side street can be a nice surprise. The city is a real web of interweaving narrow streets, broken up by stairways which sometimes end in a lovely small square.
View from the top
Fondest memory: You will have a splendid view looking down from the town. I loved the contrast between the ocher fields and the green vineyards and olive groves, the terraced cultivation on the hillsides and the tall solitary cypresses.
Entering the town
Favorite thing: Entry to the town is usually via the Port al Prato - the main gate at the northern end of the town. From here the Corso - the street starts and its uphill!! Take your time and enjoy the Palazzi around you.
