Siena: Exploring Siena at Night

by deecat

Photos:1. Il Campo Piazza in Siena at night.2. Dee in front of fountain in Siena at night.Although this may sound "square" to you "party animals", my favorite nightlife tip is to visit the famed Piazza Del Campo and its surrounding maze-like streets. The photo of me was taken by my husband Allan on our first night ever inSiena. That night was "magical" as we walked the narrow lanes toward Campo. I think that Piazza Del Campo is so famous because it is in the shape of a shell with a lovely brick floor divided into nine segments.Interestingly, the Campo is slanted because it was built at the confluence of the three hills on which the town rises. Also, I think that it is the largest Piazza that we saw in all the towns we visited in Italy.Because of the uphill climb on narrow lanes and alleyways, Siena is somewhat mysterious (similar to Venice) at night. The maze-like streets make for an...

Florence at Night: Romance is In The Air in

by deecat

One evening after have a two-hour dinner in Florence, Allan and I were walking toward Signoria Piazza for a midnight stroll. All of a sudden, we heard what we thought to be an orchestra playing beautiful melodies. As we came closer to the music, we scanned all around to discover the source. We were so surprised when we realized that all that music was the work of a lone man and his electric violin. He was so good that a crowd (small one) had gathered. Upon questioning the musician, we discovered what made the music sound so excellent. It was in the courtyard of the Uffici Museum, and the acoustics were outstanding. We, along with the rest of the people, lingered to listen. There was moonlight; it was about seventy degrees temperature, I was with my darling husband, the music surrounded us....it was a really romantic moment. It's a moment I'll never forget and that I often have "flashbacks"...

SIENA - empty & romantic streets at night

by globetrott

Walking at night in Siena will somehow take your senses really back into medieval times, due to the fact, that there is absolutely NO car-trafic in these streets and there are almost no modern buildings at all.Somehow you even expect to meet knights on horses, on their way back home... NO special dress-codes there !

Tip Photo
SIENA - Loggia della Mercanzia

by globetrott

Loggia della Mercanzia was a place under an arcady , where in the medieval times the merchants sold their goods. You may see everything through a fence and may easily take your pics at night, without all other daytourists standing around in front of your pictures. NO special dress-code required

Tip Photo
SIENA - Loggia della Marcanzia

by globetrott

The Loggia della Mercanzia looks best at night, as this great building - dating back to 1444 - was built in a place, where sunlight will never get during the day, and many of the sculptures, paintings and graffities look best at night, when they are artificially lighted.Loggia della Mercanzia is just behind Piazza del Campo and may be easily overseen by the tourists. NO special dresscode required !

Tip Photo
SIENA - Piazza del campo at night

by globetrott

Siena get also rather quiet and romantic at night, after all of the day-tourists have left the town.Of course la Piazza del Campo is the best place to go, as many of the garden-restaurants will be still open and the view on the great buildings is simply stunning.BUT beware of the prices of these restaurants !!! Every restaurant there rather will care for the customers and not so much on the dress-code.

Tip Photo
PISA - a lovely town for a night-stroll

by globetrott

Pisa is a safe place and a great town to take a walk at night.almost NO drunken people, no harrassment, no pickpokets.......at least not more than in any other place in Europe.Of course it is the best to be careful, but in Pisa you may enjoy a quiet evening, take a glass of italian wine and have dinner in one of the many smaller restaurants, as soon as the thousands of daytourists have disappeared and Pisa belongs to the local people again. No special dress-code required !

Tip Photo
Piazza dei Miracoli: PISA - a disappointment at night

by globetrott

It was a pity and big disappointment to see that "Piazza dei Miracoli" with the duomo and the leaning tower is almost NOT lighted at all after sundown. And after 10.00 p.m. it will even be totally closed for visitors, who will have to stay outside of the walls then. They will open the gates again at 07.00 a.m. No special dress-code required

Tip Photo
Santa Maria della Spina: PISA - take a walk

by globetrott

Take a walk to Santa Maria della Spina !This lovely little church, close to the river Arno is a good excemple of a sight that is absolutely worth a visit at night, as it is perfectely lighted and you may see many more details of the great gothic facade than during most of the day. Nobody cares for a dress-code there !
