We visited Pienza on a Thursday and there was an interesting market in full swing. The market commenced just outside Porta a Prato and continued along Corso Il Rossellino, and there was a good variety of goods on offer.

What to buy: There was some fresh food stalls - one selling tasty looking suckling pig rolls, along with a large range of dried meats and cheeses. For those with a sweet tooth, you may want to check out the couple of stalls selling a variety of Croccante (nut brittle).

Other items for sale included clothing, handbags and small household items and textiles. I couldn't resist taking a photo of the cactus stall as I am a fan of these prickly plants. I also snapped a pic of the tiny turtles on sale at the pet stall.

    Pienza Cheese and Tuscan traditions

Pienza is famous for its delicious pecorino of Pienza. Along the street Rossellino you can meet many shops that sell it, the Tuscan specialties, good wine (Montepulciano and Montalcino) and good gastronomic specialties!!!Impossible to withstand!!!

Italian products sold in this town

We were really impressed with Pienza. The town was spotless with no litter. All the shops were upscale and sold high quality "made in Italy" products. There were loads of cheese shops and other gourmet foods. Leather shops that were making the leather products in front of your eyes, clothing that was first class, on and on. This is the shoppers paradise. We purchase a few round cheese blocks to take home with us. They were so kind as to vacuum pack them so they would not stink and would keep their freshness.

We knew that Pienza is very famous for its faboulous Pecorino so during our stroll we had our eyes opened to find the best place to buy some cheese. We saw this small shop around a corner and went in. Turned out to be great. All their wine, cheese and salami can be tasted to decide what you like best. We tried several and ended up buying the red and the black pecorino (it is the color of the outside) and some bottle of local wine.
In case you need to take your shooping along with you during your trip ask them to put cheese and salami in vacum bags (sottovuoto in italian), they will be okay for several day even without a refrigerator (unless it is summer of course)

    not cheese but pretty nonetheless

I noticed this town had more than its fair share of cheese shops! And you could sure smell them as you passed by.
