Italy has a reputation for crazy drivers, particularly in places like Rome and Naples. As we were not visiting any big cities we decided to brave driving in Italy, and I am pleased to say it all went without a hitch.
I must admit that driving in the teaming rain on the truck-infested autostrada wasn't my idea of fun, however being able to really get off the beaten track in Tuscany was so worth it!
Our drive into Pienza was one of the driving highlights of our time in Tuscany. We drove in via a minor round from the south, and could see the town on the hill ahead of us as we wound our way through the picturesque valley. We stopped along the way to take some photos.
Once you get to the top of the hill, arriving in Pienza, you will find small parking lots around the edge of the old town. There isn't a huge amount of parking though, so grab whatever you can find. We found a shady, free parking spot about 5 minutes walk from Piazza Dante Alighieri.
If you don't have a car, you can catch a bus from Siena or Montepulciano to Pienza. There are several services a day, and they arrive/depart from Piazza Dante Alighieri.
