A suitcase with wheels or a back pack is recommended when travelling throughout Italy.

If you make it to Pisa you must climb to the top of the Leaning Tower!

It is not too hard a climb.....but I wouldn't want to do it in high heels, so make sure you bring some practical shoes!

If you are anything like me you will take numerous photos in Pisa...so make sure you bring adequate fils/batteries/cards to cope with the frantic snapping!!

    Suitcase or backpack.

Dress lightly in summer, temperature is usually about 35 degrees Celcius. In the evenings it can cool off a bit, so bring a long a sweater.

Is available here: bur don't buy film that was on a rack outside all day. The film can be damaged then.

    PISA
Field of miracles: It's not unusual to experience a sense of vertigo when standing on Pisa's Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles). The dominant feature of this grassy plaza

THE FAMOUS LEANING TOWER OF PISA

It tilts nearly 17 feet from the perpendicular.
Gravitational oddities aside, the tower and gleaming marble buildings you see nearby comprise one of the most impressive architectural ensembles in Europe.

    THE CAMPANILE

By the time its third story was complete in 1274, the bell tower, or campanile, had already begun to tilt. Nevertheless, construction continued, and the fame of the 180-foot Leaning Tower was, in effect, guaranteed. Although its interior is closed to visitors, the exterior of the Romanesque campanile is an architectural treat. Bring binoculars to view details such as the lively frieze near the top of the first level.

June 2001 Pisa reopened their beloved landmark with a celebration that included an opera performance by one of my favorite native son Andrea Bocelli(:-))

Gone are the tacky suspenders and steel rings that strangled the tower for much of the last decade. Still though, visitors must wait until November to make the dizzying climb to the top as experts are still studying the structure's stability. In the past, groups of tourists filled the 8 storey tower's staircase. This time, only 30 individuals will be allowed inside at a time.

Pisa, one of Europe's oldest university towns, is best seen on foot. Visitors can browse the Piazza delle Vettovglie's open air market on weekday mornings. There is an antique fair @ 2nd weekend of each month at the Ponte di Mezzo. Pisa is on the coast of Tuscany a region famed for its food, wine and beautiful hill towns. Many people visit Pisa as a day trip from Florence about an hour away by train.

Small Backpack, which we left at the Bus station under ground at Siena for a small charge of about 1.5 Euros per bag. In Pisa, left it in the bag deposit near the ticket office NO Cost. On Elba left it at the Bus station again behind the counter for a small cost of a bout 1.5 Euros be careful to ask the opening times as this one closes between 1.30 and 4.00 so make sure you don’t need to get a connection before.
The lockers at Siena and Lucca train stations were not in use don’t know why. The bus stations seemed to be the best bet.

T shirts, Trainers,Jeans or light trousers and shorts.

A canister of Oxygen might be a good idea everything is ether up a hill, Stairs or up the top of a Tower!

    No problems, everything available here.

Picture is of the Cathedral in Siena do not miss The most beautiful Cathederal I've ever seen.

Book hotels , accomodation in advance it was very busy even for this early on the season May 9/10/11 2002.
The Hostel in Siena was closed so was the one in San Gimignano, don't know why Please check in advance especially if on a tight budget.
The hosels in Pisa and Florence are open.

  • Depends how long you will stay in Pisa (from 1-3 days) for example, just a simple backpack will do.
For more than a week, bring a small luggage

Always bring comfortable shoes, long pants/skirts, and long sleeved shirts, besides summer clothes (for the summer weather, of course)

always bring your indispensible first aid kit, no matter where you go. That's a must.
