The same river that flows through Florence also flows through the city of Pisa. Other than the Leaning Tower I found admiring the picturesque view of the river winding through the city to be the second most beautiful sight.

The Arno river flows through the center of Pisa from East to West. During the time we were there we only saw a solitary canoe the river which seems completely devoid of boats of any kind giving the river area an unusual atmosphere, especially in the early evening as the sun was setting.

Lungarno Mediceo (Medicean River Walk), has the Romanesque San Matteo Church, the Palace of the Medici, and the National Museum of San Matteo, which is housed in the Benedictine Monastery all along its path. Other displays is a rich collection of sculpture from the Pisano School and a compilation of paintings from the 12th to 18th centuries.

To understand the past and the present of Pisa, one should not miss a walk around the Lungarni, the streets running along the river. There are amazing buildings here, popular and noble. Walking on the Lungarno you can see the typical Tower houses, and many noble palaces which accommodated famous writers over the centuries, such as Lord Byron and P.B. Shelley.

The Arno River runs through Pisa, and is lined with grand old buildings.

Why not buy a gelato nearby and spend some time contemplating life overlooking the river.

Stand on the Ponte di Mezzo and take some photos.

A river with no boats

The river Arno flows through Pisa with hardly a ripple on it as I didn't see one single boat on it! The river is lined with nice buildings and divides Pisa into two areas: Mezzogiorno to the south and Tramontana to the north.

The river Arno

After visiting the Campo di Miracoli I went for a stroll along the banks of the river Arno. On the banks of the river you can see beautiful houses.

At the end of the day I rushed back to my campsite. I camped just outside Viareggio close to the beach. So what better to do than cool off in the sea for a while, after such a beautiful sunny day :-)

Agostini palace

This beautiful building along the Arno river is one of the oldest in the city. The building is made of terracotta and decorated with Gothic motifs. Just as a number of other buildings in the city, the palace tilts to the right due to Pisa's friable ground conditions.

Peaceful isnt it???

As we wondered from the railway station we crossed thr river....many times (thank you Azhut!!!)
Its a lovely setting, the way it slips around the town very elegantly,no boats on it at all.
Lovely setting for a decent photographer or artist.
