    In the Piazza Garibaldi

Another square that deserves some of your attention is the Piazza Garibaldi. It lies in the exact centre of the city, and in fact the bridge opposite the square is called the Ponte di Mezzo, the "Middle Bridge". At the centre of the square is of course a statue of Garibaldi himself. The square is one of the gathering points in Pisa. People meet beneath the statue or in one of several bars that edge the square (we had a pleasant pre-dinner drink in the arcaded bar on the north side), or queue for ices at the popular La Bottega del Gelato, said to be the best ice-cream shop in the city. We didn’t get round to testing this but VT member sue_stone has a pretty convincing review on her Pisa page.

On the north side of the square one of the city’s most chic and cosmopolitan streets begins, the Borgo Stretto. Look up as you walk through the arch that marks its start, at this beautiful wooden sculpture of the Holy Virgin.

    Piazza Garibaldi

Piazza Garibaldi is a busy Piazza, across the road from the River Arno.

It appears to be a bit of a meeting place for students and tourists alike - always something going on.

But the hidden gem of this piazza is that here is the place to taste the best gelato in town!! (see my food tips)

Giuseppe Garibaldi Square is the square that you find after walking on Ponte di Mezzo. It stands at the beginning of the touristic area called Borgo Stretto. The arcades of Borgo Stretto invite visitors to wander around and treat themselves to elegant Italian fashions. Or branch off into Via Vernagalli and Via Mercanti, which are also ideal for shopping, enjoying delicious snacks or simply strolling aroun
