This was the way I used during my trip there in November 2003. Itýs relatively easy to get there using railways, since it lies on the main line connecting Milan with Rome and Naples, passing through Bologna and Florence. Prato itself is just 10-20 minutes by train from the Tuscanyýs capital of Florence.
However, thereýs one thing to remember if you decide on the railway as the means of transportation. Keep in mind that some trains do not stop in Prato. Eurostar Italia trains (the fastest and the most comfortable of the internal Italian trains), for example, do not make this stop. But with all the other trains, like Regional, Interregional, InterCity you should be OK.
