San Donato in Poggio Restaurants

Very informal setting, trestle tables, benches, swings for the kids, cheap but brilliant pizza, cold beer, all served in the open air or under a somewhat faded marquee...nothing glamorous, but heavily requented by locals. Don't get there late or you will queue for 20 mins and then wait 45 for your pizza. Still worth it though.

    Favorite Dish: Pizza and beer!

I live in the area, and have lots of excellent restaurents to choose from. But the one restaurant I go to every year, and no more than twice a year (because I never want to take it for granted) is Macereto.

We send many of our guests here, and many have said that it was the best meal of their lives.

You'll find the host Wynn (yes, it's a Welsh name!) knowledgable and funny. Let him choose your wine. Feel free to share antipasti and primi, especially if you are having a Fiorentina (excellent meat) or the Suckling Pig (superb). It's set in the woods away from any roads...a most unusual setting.

You can't go wrong, I promise you.

Favorite Dish: Duck curry pasta! Best pasta dish on the planet.

Quite simply one ofthe best meals we've ever had. The pasta and roast suckling pig were amazing! The owner's choices in wine were spot on, the place charming...great service and superb food. This restaurent is not a driving force guiding my next trip to Tuscany.

Favorite Dish: Curried duck pasta! Amazing!

Badia a Passignano. too small for a separate entry. Home of a magnificent fortified abbey (badia in Italian), and.. if you take the dirt track just past the abbey driving up from the Pesa valley and go down into the valley, you will find a magnificent lake for swimming. Don't take any notice of the Divieto di balneazione signs. You won't be alone!
