The essence of the wine ...

    San Gimignano

Late fall afternoon in Tuscany near the town of San Gimignano. We were five in our party, in that little Fiat. The sun had set as we rounded and rounded upwardly winding - when flames shot out into the new gray starless sky transformed into red black gold flame and smoke as white as an old mans beard. The farmers were burning a field … preparing it for the coming season. We wandered out of the car and among the fire. The farmers paid little mind as one of us began taking pictures of the fire and the shadows of workers in the smoke. That night we drank the local wine fresh from the fiasco. Each time I taste this wine I smell the smoke on the hillside and see my friends dancing in the firelight.

    San Agostino Church and Piazza

by Bigs Updated Nov 14, 2002
    San Agostino

This church is in a quiet area of the town, and not many tourists will find its way up here. I think it´s a nice place and there is also a little chapel next to the big church too.

You can see our large bedroom window (the red mark) of "La Mezzana Rossa" on this pic!

    compound for sleeping tourists

There are some real nice places to see on the way up the winding road. Most are active farms, or B&B places to be able to stay. The one below is advertized along the road as overnight stay.

At the end of Via San Giovanni, just in front of the Torre dei Cugnanesi you can see a very small tower called Torre dei Campatelli with its palace.

Siena is not my favorite city, but if you have not been there, then decide for yourself. Most people love it.

    The path

A great way to see the Tuscan countryside is to walk around the wall of the city. It has a well-worn path and you can really get an apreciation of the majesty of Tuscany.

    An artist with his paintings

True, this place is far away from the crowd you see at Via San Giovanni or Piazza del Duomo for example.
The place here is calm, peaceful and of course worth of seeing.

The walls of an old fort...

by Bigs Written Nov 14, 2002
In the back you can see the old walls

...or something like that are a good viewing point! You will have a nice view over the towers from here. It´s a bit outside the main tourist area, behind the duomo.
