Favorite thing: From Siena you have easy access to the best of Tuscany. San Gimigniano, Monteriggioni, Ama, Castellina in Chianti, and Vagliagli are all within an hour's drive from Siena and each has a different feel to it and a different story to tell.

Favorite thing: If your time is limited in Siena as mine was, make sure you bring good walking shoes and stroll the Centro Storico, the city's historic center. It is a relatively compact area that surrounds the Piazza del Campo, but be prepared for lots of hills and steep steps that lead out of the the square itself.
The Piazza is supposedly one of the best in Italy. You'll find that it's a great gathering place for locals and tourists alike. In fact, the streets in Siena all funnel downward toward the Piazza, so it's difficult to get lost. There are some great shops and restaurants in the area.

Favorite thing: Siena is a steep city to walk around. If you are here on a daytrip, allow enough time to see the sights, at least 4 hours.

Favorite thing: From the moment you enter the old part of Siena, where cars are not allowed, all streets are narrow and enclosed by high buildings. I liked these houses with their typical windows.

Siena: a good place to learn Italian :-)

So this was my “entry” into famed Toscana. I don’t like the Toscana very much, especially because of the hype people create around it. It is as if many non Italians reduce Italy to Toscana only and......
