    Gelateria Brivido

On our second visit to Siena we needed an afternoon sweet treat and decided to try the gelato from Gelateria Brivido, which is located close to Piazza del Campo.

It is just across the road from Gelateria La Costarella Caffe, and I have since found out that both places are owned by the same people - they are certainly on a good thing, both shops are in the perfect tourist catching location.

Gelateria Brivido specialises in not just ordinary ice cream, but also sherbets and granita - fruity, icy style ice cream. Always boringly predictable, we stuck to the creamy variety - a couple of scoops each of coffee & hazelnut flavours gave us the sugar hit we were after.

Gelateria La Costarella Caffe is located just off Piazza del Campo, and is a busy little place. A great place for a quick coffee, gelato or snack, and if you eat in, see if you can nab one of the little seats out on the tiny terrace that looks over the magnificent piazza - this is one of the special places in Siena!

On our last visit to Siena (Sep 2007) we spent some time sitting on the terrace enjoying the views over the square.

On our first visit to Siena we stopped into Gelateria La Costarella Caffe and bought some tasty gelato, which we ate on the mini terrace. Second time round we stopped in for a quick 'pick me up' coffee, eyeing out the gelato for a later date.

The café caters for tourists, with friendly enough English speaking staff, and there is also a toilet if you can be bothered queuing.

  • Antipasti and Parmesan Souffle - Siena
    Antipasti and Parmesan Souffle
    by sue_stone, 4 more photos
Researching prior to our visit to Siena in Sep 2007, I put together a list of a few good sounding places to have lunch. After checking them out we were either not impressed with the menu, or there was no room for the 4 of us. So I turned to our trusty guidebook and spotted Hosteria Il Carroccio.

First impressions were good, and we managed to nab the last free table. Phew. Service was friendly and the house wine went down just fine.

To start, we ordered a couple of things to share - the Antipasto Toscano and the Parmesan Soufflé with walnuts & honey. The soufflé was absolutely delicious! One of the tastiest things we ate on our trip. We all had pasta for main course - the Tagliatelle with wild boar sauce was the standout.

A great, relaxed place for lunch.

Lunch time found us wandering around close to Ristorante Grotta Santa Caterina, and seeing as I had read some good reviews about the place we decided to give it a go.

Ristorante Grotta Santa Caterina is located just of the main drag. It has some tables outside in the narrow street, and more inside. We chose to sit outside as it was a mild autumn day. The outside quickly filled up with tourists - any locals headed inside.

Service was ok....not rude, just a bit indifferent. We were just happy to take a rest for a while and fill up before continuing our explorations.

There was a good range of pastas and meat dishes to choose from, along with some special fresh mushroom dishes.

We just decided to stick to the one course that day for lunch - Alex had the Pappardelle al cinghiale and I had the Pici al cinghiale (these are both different types of pasta with Wild Boar sauce). Both were delicious. We also shared a half bottle of the house wine.

The bill came to 24 euro for lunch.

Fori Porta: If you ask me my favorite restaurant EVER....

  • Satisfaction:
  • Callavetta
  • Updated By Callavetta on March 1, 2006

  • I am about to tell you about my favorite restaurant in all the world.

My first experience with Fori Porta was on a rainy Sunday afternoon. My travel partner, Janet, and I blew into Siena with a thunder storm. After finally catching a taxi to our hotel, we got a recommendation from our host to this place, "about 100 meters down the road".

By the time we got there, borrowed umbrellas aside, we were pretty darn drenched. We were seated by Paolo, who I suspected wondered if he really wanted us in the place! But how wrong I was! Paolo came back to our table with a bottle of wine which he plunked down in front of us (we had not ordered anything yet) with three glasses. Then he took Janet by the arm and off he went with her, leaving me to work on my first glass of marvelous red wine.

A little while later they returned, Janet having been blown dried and comfortable by Paolo in the back with a handy hair dryer! Janet and I tried to peruse the menu but Paolo convinced us to give them up, and just let him bring us food.

Oh and what food he brought! A starter of four delicious regional specialties had us convinced we had not made a mistake. Something done with white beans, a spot of tuna somehow blended with other things, fresh home made ravioli..... And every chance he got, Paolo would sit in the third chair he had pulled up and drink from that third glass.

I honestly don't remember what I ate that day. I just remember thinking I had died and gone to heaven. Each course (and they kept coming) was better and better. Finally Janet sat back looking like she would never ever put another bite in her mouth and then came the tiramisu. I swear she was licking her plate!

And Paolo did not let up with the wine; red, white, grappa, lemoncello..... I thought perhaps we might just have to live at that table for the rest of our lives.

Paolo was completely charming and took a photo of the three of us. We finally did leave the table. But we returned for dinner again while we were in Siena. It was just as good and again I suspected we may never get to leave.

Fast forward two years. Janet and I took a day trip to Siena from Florence. We were intent on having lunch at Fori Porto. It was a scalding hot day and we finally trekked all the way across the town to Porto Romano and down the hill. It seemed a lot farther than 100 meters this time. We were seated by a very formal elderly man who gave us a menu. After a few minutes, Paolo walked by. He stopped and did a double take. Holding up a finger as if to say "uno momento" he disappeared, returning with a photo album. And wouldn't you just know he would leaf through the album until he found that photo of the three of us!

Put down your menu and let Paolo order for you. The home made pasta will melt in your mouth. The regional specialties are so good and probably not something you'd know enough about to try to order!

La Taverna del Cecco is probably the best restaurant I tried in Siena. Great service and delicious food!!! You must try the Tuscany appetizer with Bruschetta, ham and Finocchietto Salami. Then I can suggest to try Picci with boar gravy, or Tortellini with mushrooms, cream and jam. Do you can try also other kind of pasta!!!! For main dish you must taste the Fiorentina steak, the delicious Tuscany dish!!!! And at the end as dessert you must try the Cantucci and Vin Santo: the typical Sienese sweet with one of the better Tuscany wine!!

Guido's sounds like a cheap spaghetti place in Atlanta, but it is a really nice restaurant in Siena. My wife says it was one of the 2 best meals we had in Italy in 2 weeks. It is on a back street (aren't they all) off the Campo and has an informal but elegant feel to it. It is not the cheapest place, but well worth the money.

We had bruschetta, mist salad, cannoli ala Guido (cream sauce with eggplant), spinach, rustici ala Guido (pasta with cream sauce, asparagus, mushrooms and truffles) washed down with a nice Chianti Classico and topped of with Creme Ciliegia (a delicious custard with cherry sauce). All of it was delicious.

We didn't know where to have lunch in Siena so we went into a local flower shop and asked for a recommendation (my husband always likes to ask the locals and eat where they like to eat!). They sent us down the street (and it was literally "down" - a very very steep little street!) to "Bagoga". The interior looks very elegant and the space very much Siena-like, with brick columns, arches and ceiling. The food was excellent and the prices very reasonable.

My husband had the boar meat and found it very good; I had the veal with lemon and sour cream, simple but exquisitely good! In fact, I thought it was the best prepared veal I have ever had (and I have had some really good ones in different cities with 1st rate Italian restaurants, like in the North End in Boston, in NY, and, of course, in Florence). If you are not vegetarian, try that veal dish! I am not a big eater, but since my daughter took a few bites our of my plate, I ordered a second one!

  • I stumbled across this restaurant on my trip to Siena and It must have been fate. First of all, the food is fantastic! The chef, Mimmo, is absolutely amazing. I am from NYC and we have some great restaurants and I think im pretty picky. Hands down this was the best meal i've ever eaten. Ok, so it gets even better.... we have this fantastic dinner ala Mimmo and the other people working at the restaurant (Stefano, Ali, Cosimo) made some great recommendations for wine, etc. We had such a GREAT time with them that we all ended up going out afterwards... they showed us the town and this really was one of the best nights I had in Italy. I have such great memories of Siena and Guido's, I really do. When i left Siena the next day, i had tears in my eyes! I wanted to go right back and see the Guido boys.... I actually tailored my trip to come back to Siena... and went back to Guido's for my final meal - then we all went to the Siena v. Fiorentina soccer game. What a great ending to a great trip. If you see this post and go to Guido's, tell Ali and Stefano that Kelly says hello!

Mimmo's truffle pasta is to die for, the man is a god. I had two different truffle dishes there and both were out of this world. I actually bought the ingredients to try and make at home... and my dish was a complete joke compared to Mimmo's. Not only is he blessed with good looks, he's blessing with an amazing cooking talent. Also - try the goat cheese appetizer - it is melt in your mouth delicious!

I really cant say enough about this place. Food, atmosphere, details - - everything was great. I guess it was a little pricey, but nothing im not accustomed to in NYC... and it was well worth EVERY penny and then some.

    Pasta with ricotta and tomato

In Sep 2007, we stayed one night at Il Canto del Sole, a friendly B&B located in an 18th century Tuscan farm house, 10km south of Siena. The B&B serve dinner upon request, and if you are staying there I suggest you stick around for a meal - not only was it excellent, but it is the only place nearby to eat.

In summer they serve dinner out on the terrace, but in the cooler months it is served in the atmospheric dining room, which has a large central fireplace. The night we visited was a little cool, so dinner was served indoors. It seemed like everyone who was staying at the B&B that night opted to have the evening meal. There was around 20 of us all up, and when dinner was announced we filed in and chose one of the large tables to sit at.

Dinner is a set menu, consisting of typical Tuscan dishes. There is plenty of excellent local wine on offer and you can order what ever bottle you like (at your cost).

Our meal started with Pasta with ricotta and tomato - it was delicious, the ricotta was produced on the farm. Next we had Roast chicken with vegetables, and finished up with Home made chocolate ice cream, which was rich and creamy.

The atmosphere was great, helped along even more by the complimentary Vin Santo that appeared at the end of the meal. A very enjoyable evening was had by all.
