Regione Toscana founded in 1979 the Massaciuccoli-San Rossore Regional Park. The park lies between Pisa and Viareggio, between the lake and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Park covers an area of 23 thousand hectares in which a typically Mediterranean fauna can be found. A peculiar aspect of the Park is the presence of Atlantic and continental vegetation which does not usually grow in the Mediterranean area. Torre del Lago represents the most natural aspect of Versilia, one of the better known Italian tourism destinations, not only for its wonderful beaches but also for its history and culture. Since the second half of the 19th century, Viareggio, world-known thanks to its spectacular Carnival, has welcomed many famous personalities and great artists, who enriched the city's intellectual and social life.
