  • Pickpockets

    Florence Warnings and Dangers

Pickpockets are fewer in Florence than in Rome and Naples but they are here. Gypsy kids are pretty obvious but tourists miss the real pros who look just like everyone else. Actually, the drunks and drug addicts who accummulate outside SMN at night have no interest in tourists, but there are pickpockets in any crowded art of the station and near and...

  • The Tower

    Pisa Warnings and Dangers

I have never felt the need to climb the Tower, but you may. You will certainly need to book your ticket online in advance. Tower tickets are strictly limited per day, and are frequently block-booked by tour groups. The chances of you getting tickets by just wandering up and slim at any time of year and, I suspect, non-existent if you visit in high...

    Florence Warnings and Dangers

I don't really know what happened; my Italian isn't good enough, and the shopkeeper couldn't/wouldn't speak English. But is was a most unpleasant experience, and possibly worth relating as a warning. I had purchased a pack of 100 cigarettes (a present) from a small 'Tabacchi' (on Via Cavour, very near Piazza S. Marco). Paid cash, got change, no...

    Pisa Warnings and Dangers

The gypsies are in huge numbers in Pisa especially at the train station! Travelers are distracted usually rolling luggage along, reading signs and distracted with the noise and people. They are carrying all their money and valuables. This is a perfect time for thieves to strike. It is usually with a slight bump that can happen in a crowded setting....

    Florence Warnings and Dangers

Everywhere! Lots of people, surrounding buildings, mixing with spread statues, filling your photos. I was there in winter, so... I may imagine what happens in summer. It's "forbidden" to make a picture without a multitude of heads and backs.

    Pisa Warnings and Dangers

On our way home from a trip to Florence we visited Pisa and wandered up the street away from the cathedral looking for somewher for lunch. We went into a modern, nice looking restaurant with friendly staff and service (don't remember the name but about fifty yards before the Japanese restaurant on the right). After 2 pizzas, a sprite, a beer, 2...

  • Taxis

    Florence Warnings and Dangers

Even with the taxis using meters I got ripped off three times. Once was by not being familiar with the city and I took a taxi from the train station to the Hotel--which was 5 blocks away! It still came to 5 Euros. Another time I got lost 2 blocks from the hotel and we drove around for a while longer than necessary. The last time, my teenaged...

    Pisa Warnings and Dangers

There is a place at the trainstation to store the luggage, B U T : it is OUT OF ORDER due to the attacks of Sept. 11th. Recently at least the counter was reopened again, where you may hand over your lugguage to the people in the trainstation - BUT only at restricted hours you may get it back, and you have to pay an extra fee for each and every,...

  • Children Might Fear Innocent Statue

This is not really a warning as such, but I did not know where else to place it.In Florence, there is a metal (bronze) statue of a wild boar, and local tales say that if you rub the nose of the boar, you will have good luck. If you look closely, you will see that the boar's nose has been rubbed so often, its finish is light and shines more than the...

  • Watch out for the smell!

In my must see tips I told you about Saturnia and the natural hot springs. It was wonderful to have this free spa treatment here, but there is one big disadvantage that I want to warn you about. The wonderful warm water is sulphorous, which makes these baths so special. But as you might now, sulphor has this distinct smell of rotten eggs. And when...

  • PISA - calculate your time !

When arriving in Pisa it is the best to rush to Piazza dei Miracoli and go to the central ticket-office there behind the leaning tower. There you may get combination-tickets for 3 , 4 or 5 of the attractions.AND the tickets for the leaning tower. These tickets are sold out quickly, as every 30 minutes only a certain amount of people is allowed to the...

  • SIENA - calculate your time !!

Climbing up the campanile of Palazzo Publico is certainly one of the highlights in Siena.Only 900 persons a day are allowed to climb up the narrow stairs to the top of the Campanile. Buy your ticket inside the court on the back in the court and REGISTER AS SOON AS possible in the morning for a certain time to climb up the tower.500 steps are to be...

  • A little bit is more than you imagine...

Be very careful ... or you will fall deeply and permanently in love with Italy ... and long for it on summer days when you climb to the tar beach of your rooftop on the upper west side of Manhattan ... or wherever you may be in summer or winter or anytime when you aren’t there, sipping the best coffee in the world, enjoying its most savory...

  • PISA - a rather narrow door in the tower

Climbing up the leaning tower in Pisa is no problem and most of the steps are rather wide until you get to the 1st platform. Then you have to enter trough a rather narrow door, beeing just maybe 45 cm wide. This might be one of the reasons, why you are NOT allowed with your back-packs or bigger luggage to climb up the tower.

It's a great walk from the Castello back to the village of Bagnone, but we did see the odd snake basking in the sunshine on the path, it saw us coming though and moved out the way, think it was a Tuscan Viper although I didnt chase it for a closer look to make sure.

...and then I made a test directely at the tower, and put my luggage in front of the church and left, watching it from far away. - And nothing happened - No-one was interested in the suitcase, that might have a BOMB INSIDE ...I simply think, if terrorists would like to attack PISA - they attack the tower and church - but NEVER the lousy...
