There are few casual tourists here - RIETI is a destination for pilgrims who yearn to experience the legends of Saint Francis. While acceptance of the legends is obligatory upon none, the miracle now might lie in the regard and devotion which marks this path of goodness with shrines - grottos which have drawn pilgrims since the early days of Saint Francis nearly 800 years ago.
Fonte Colombo is today as it was 800 years ago, only a very small church has been added in the front - the stone pathways - the cave where St Francis wrote the Canticle - the stone chapel - the mountain paths - all were built and tread by the Saint.
This secret jewel in the Franciscan crown has always been dimmed by the notoriety of Assisi. Now you can experience an official, marked, "Saint Francis Walk" of 80 kilometres through the sacred valley - inaugurated in December 2003, and divided into eight stops that have been blessed by the presence of Saint Francis.

I walked into the men's toilet before boarding our tour bus on our way out frm Assis and stumbled upon this window that looks out to this magnificent patch of green land. Best way to represent the beauty and simplicity of Umbria region...Make sure you stop by the toilet by the bus parking!

The church of San Damiano does not have a great importance under the artistic point of view, especially if you compare it with some of the basilicas of Assisi, however it is a place that is a critical link in the history of both Saint Francis and Santa Clare. Saint Francis hid himself from his father who was obstructing his monastic choice in the cave under the edifice.
Photo 2 - the refrectory where Saint Clare and the nuns ate their meals.

Here St. Clare spent her monastic experience from 1212 and founded the Order of St. Clare. In the "small hut of linens in a corner of the house" San Francesco wrote the first draft of the Canticle of the Creatures.
