    Basilica Santa Maria Angeli

by Willettsworld Written Jul 26, 2005

Santa Maria Degli Angeli lies a few miles away from Assisi on the flat plain. It boasts this huge imposing basilica which was constructed between 1569 and 1679 and crowned by the magnificent dome designed by Alessi. Inside are the Porziuncola (the nucleus of the first Franciscan monastery and the place where St Clare received the Francican cowl from St Francis in 1211) and the Cappella del Transito where St Francis died on 3rd October 1226.

    On the way to Assisi

by Willettsworld Updated Jul 26, 2005

This is the view of Assisi you see as you come down the road from the nearby town of Santa Maria Degli Angeli. The red brick path in the photo has peoples names and where they're from etched into them. I presume they may have contributed to the expense of building the path as a pilgrim route.

    View from the top

From Assisi you can drive up to the top of the mountain through the regional park (Parco del Monte Subasio). High above the treeline you'll enjoy a 360 degree view of the valleys below. The road continues on back to Assisi.

    The town of Gubbio

Gubbio is on my list for next time

I did not get here, but I wanted to. Gubbio does not get that many tourists, but it is supposed to be very beautiful. It's about an hour away from Assisi. The day I was supposed to visit Gubbio, I came down with a bad case of home sickness and cried on and off all day. I know that sounds weird, but that's what happened. I typically have one night like that in a 3 week vacation. I just miss my house and dogs, and I feel adrift. Very strange. Because I was traveling alone, it was an all day event

    Side Streets

Wander down some side streets to see the beautiful architecture of Assisi. Be ready for the hills and a lot of walking, but the town isn't very big so getting lost isn't a big problem.
