Thank you Patricia Clough and Natalie John

by Trekki

Unfortunately the best two books about Umbria are in German only. One is Franziskus, die Winzer und der Trüffelhund by Natalie John, published by Picus, Austria (13,90 €).The other one, very similar in its writing style is Gebrauchsanweisung Umbrien by Patricia Clough, published by Piper, Germany (12,90 €). Both books are not travel guides, but books which describe atmosphere and soul of Umbria very excellent. I had Patricia Clough’s book in my luggage and it was fascinating to read it during my travel. Whatever she wrote about holy stones or food, people and landscapes, San Francesco and the spirit, I found all so fit and proper as if she wrote exactly what I saw and perceived about this glorious region of Italy.Another good book is available in English as well: Landscapes of Umbria and the Marches by Georg Henke, published by Sunflower Books (15,99 USD resp. 12,99 £ according to...

Cuisine of Umbria

by rubbersoul75

Umbria is landlocked, so the cuisine is rugged and from the earth. Though not much fish on the menu (besied some trout and crayfish from the lakes/rivers), the restaurants offer a great variety of food choices. Lamb and pork are the big meat dishes.Umbria is the only area in Italy outside of Piedmont that you find signifigant amout of truffles. We visited in the late summer and found many wonderful dishes with truffle on the menu, and subsequently on our plate. The bigest discovery we made was a pasta found only (as far as I can tell) in central and eastern Umbria. It is called "strongozzi" and is a thick flavorful noodle.. we found mostly Strongozzi au Tartufo - Strongozzi with truffle. The truffle is cooked into the pasta and we loved it. If you find it on the menu get it, we have not been able to find this pasta anywhere else in Italy. And don't forget the Perugian Chocolates for some...

Driving in Umbria

by hamuller

Having spent two weeks in Umbria and staying at an apartment for two weeks I have to tell you that the Italian drivers will hang on your back bumper so close you will think they are trying to draft you to save on gas! They don't know what it means to keep a safe distance between cars! Many of the roads in Umbria are very mountainous and I've seen the Italian drivers trying to pass on a downhill curve! Expect the unexpected and you won't be disapointed! I enjoyed the beautiful mountain scenery and the quiet little mountain towns.
