Signore Lanzi and his heavenly sausages :-)

Norcia is the world capital of the best sausages. This, as the oak forests around Norcia provide excellent food for pigs and wild boars. It is even so famous that you might run across the name “Norcineria” throughout Italy, which means butcher. Norcia locals were travelling thoughout Italy in the past and were soon recognised to have the best sausage. Over the years, they elaborated their recipes and that’s what you can get all over Norcia now : -)

As I was here by plane and then travelling in a rented car, my luggage capacity was quite limited. The sausage I bought (photo 4) was the best I ever had. I bought it at Lanzi, Villa della Stazione in Norcia, which is off the piazza. For three of these pairs I paid 18 Euro. I chose this shop because it was a bit off the main “sausage” streets and the owner waved me in with a friendly smile. It turned out that he spoke German (why am I always recognised as German???) and has a brother in Mannheim, selling delicious Norcia sausages.

For more information about the several types of Norcia sausage, read the website below.

    Cioccolateria Vetusta Nursia: Chocolate heaven

Chocolate Easter egg, tradition in Italy

The other very much delicious shop I found in Norcia was Cioccolateria Vetusta Nursia (photo 3), just off main piazza (or opposite of the Loggia dei Mercanti at San Benedetto to be precise), where they had the most marvellous chocolate products. As it was only briefly past Easter, they still had their chocolate Easter eggs (main photo), huge and with hand made icing decoration. I was very much tempted, but… didn’t buy one of these and only bought some chocolate (photo 2), each for 2,50 Euro, as well as some chocolate truffles with a mint-green tea filling (3 Euro).

    Visit a "norcineria"

If you go to Norcia, home town of the famous saint S. Benedetto, you cannot miss to visit one or more "norcineria" (plural: norcinerie). Norcino is a very ancient word which means a person able to make ham, salami and sausages. Norcia is very well known for its own ham, very tasty and very different from Parma ham, although they are basically the same thing. But, being both not industrial prodoct but a sort of "handcraft" ones, the results are very different and both very delicious.

What to buy: Norcia Ham (better in vacuum package for the travel)
