Without a doubt the easiest way to get to Orvieto is by train. Just under an hour from Rome the key is to check it stops in Orvieto don’t mix this up with Ort. (it’s been done)

When you arrive see my other transport tip for how to get up into the town.

Funivia (a tram or cable car)

If you arrive in the walled hill top town of Orvieto by train you will find yourself at the very foot of this medieval city. Out side the train station you will be presented with two options to get up to the town of Orvieto. The first option a bus service and secondly a funivia which is a cable car or tram. Both are regular but the funivia more so, every 15min. I think this is a great way to arrive in this special town.

The Funivia is directly opposite the station and just looks like a small brick building. Ask a local if in doubt.

    Easy with train and funicular!

Fourteen trains on the main Rome-Florence line stop at Orvieto daily (1 3/4 hr. from Florence; 1 hr., 20 min. from Rome, less with inter-city train).

Find your train with the officiel timetable online of Trenitalia (ex Ferrovie dello Stato)
    http://62.110.170.234/webapp/trenitalia/input_it.jsp

Look always at the calendar strike of rail workers, at www.trasportinavigazione.it (Ministero dei trasporti)

To reach the upper old center (the "rupe"), cross the square and take the funicular. You can buy a funicular-only ticket or a combined funicular-and-bus ticket, at the newspaper shop inside the station, that lets you hop on a minibus at the top of the funicular run (Piazza Cahen) and ride into the center of town.
