Good shoes, rain protection and binoculars

by Trekki

If you want to visit the old cities and might need to park “outisde” or walk from train/bus stations to your accommodation, I would recomment that you bring luggage on wheels or backpacks, they are easier to carry on the often cobblestoned roads. Definitely bring shoes with which you are comfortable for walking. Often, the roads are steep and often they have cobblestones. Your feet will be grateful in the evening. Bring warm clothes, even in summer, as the temperature in the valleys might get colder than at the coast. Umbrella or raincoat might be a good idea, depending on the season. I needed good rainprotection in April (2008). If you want to visit churches, bring something to cover arms and legs, as you might not be let in with unappropriate clothes. There are enough pharmacies where you can get medical supply. Bring translation for prescriptions. You might like to bring first aid...

Visits to churches

by sierralyndon

Even in the heat of summer, remember to have handy with you (in your backpack or slingbag or whatever) something with sleeves, so that you can go into the many churches around Umbria. I normally go around outdoors in my singlet and I carry a very light cardigan around with me.If there are ushers (in the bigger towns), they'll make sure you have something with sleeves on and that you have your knees covered. Even if there are no ushers around and the church looks deserted, it's still a good idea to be dressed decent before entering a place of worship as a mark of respect for residents in the area.
