Marmore waterfall

by janchan

The Marmore waterfall (cascata delle Marmore) is near the city of Terni (100 km north of Rome). With its 165 meters, is one of the highest waterfalls in Europe. In the river just below it's possible to practice rafting.Price:The price of 2,57 euro includes parking, the access to footpaths and the little bus from the lower to the upper Belvedere. The opening time is quite complicated, because the fall is used in a hydroelectric plant. During the weekends anyway it stays open for a longer time.

Orvieto - Things I missed

by sierralyndon

There were two things that I did not see when I was in Orvieto... mainly because I was ill-informed before I got there.1) The Well of St Patrick (Pozzo di San Patrizio) constructed in the 16th century, and apparently pure engineering genius! Donkeys could go down the well on staircases to bring the water up.2) Underground caves! I read that you are able to take a guided tour of the caverns underneath the town. There are tunnels, galleries, wells and all sorts of interesting things. People used to store food underground. Also there were underground quarries and oil-presses.I will update this tip to give a first-hand view once I visit these places!

Orvieto - Il Duomo

by sierralyndon

The town cathedral was built in the 13th and 14th centuries, and is one of the most famous churches in Italy. I think I expected something HUGE after all that I had read about it, but was pleasantly surprised to find a far smaller church. It is of Gothic origins and the inside has works by Signorelli (including the renowned Inferno).

Assisi - Basilica di San Francesco

by sierralyndon

Assisi was home to St. Francis. The church was built in his honour, after his death. No doubt the church today dominates the town, and thousands and thousands of pilgrims come to pay homeage every year. His remains are also located in his sepulchre in the church. Crowds (and surprisingly disrespectful, noisy visitors) aside, the church itself is remarkable. The ceilings are a deep blue with what appear to be tiny golden stars (just showing my ignorance here, I am sure there is a name to this art form/style!) - it's like you're staring up into the night sky. Other works in the church belong to Giotto and Cimabue, among others. Note also the lovely stained glass windows. While walking around in the church, it was hard not to picture the news footage that was shown over and over of the church ceilings near the altar crumbling down on the monks standing there, several years ago. The damaged...

Spoleto - Roman Theatre

by sierralyndon

Remnants of a roman theatre can be found in Spoleto. It is still in relatively good condition (it has probably been restructured somewhat, though I can't be sure of that) and concerts, plays and ballets are held there during the summer time (though I did not have the opportunity to see them when I was there last).

Spoleto - The Duomo

by sierralyndon

The Cathedral (il duomo) of Spoleto has been around since Roman times. It is at the bottom of a gentle slope in the piazza - never quite seen anything like that before. The building itself is testament to the various periods of the town... I am no expert on this, but I believe that there are some quite obvious renaissance period art and architecture. Frescoes and paintings inside are worth the visit.
