Skiing in Courmayeur

by firechick

The small Courmayeur ski area is very beautiful and well maintained, with lovely wooden huts scattered over the slopes, some of which operate as restaurants in winter and others of which are only used in summer as alpages for guarding the cows. The views of the mountains are amazing and skiing on the pistes (and off) is often wide open because many people who come here seem like to sunbathe at the side of the piste rather than ski on it... Great food like minestrone soup and local cheeses in the restaurants on piste as well. Lifts are now managed in conjunction with the Compagnie du Mont Blanc and lift openings/piste status can be found on that website. http://www.courmayeur-montblanc.com/cmb/courmayeur.asp?langue=FRThis is an easy day trip from Chamonix via the Mt Blanc tunnel and makes a nice change of pace and language to skiing in Chamonix. To see some of the best of the Gran Paradiso National Park, try this walk. It takes about 2.5 hours to get up and about 1.5 hours to come down. But surprisingly the journey down took longer than we expected. On the way up you'll go past two or three glacial waterfalls (gorgeous!!) and by the time you get near the top there will be an abundance of wildlife! While we were there we saw dozens of marmots, ibex and chamois. Look at my travelogue for animal photos... I am really pleased with them. Look out also for the diversity of flora. The Alpine Hut - Rifugio Vittorio Sella - used to be a royal hunting...
