Do NOT buy lace that shop assistants or owners in Burano claim is made by local women. This is a lie. The only locally made pieces they might sell are handkerchiefs with a tiny corner of lace at approximately €200. The others are excessively expensive handkerchiefs and doilies made in other countries and that can be bought elsewhere at one-third or even one-tenth the price. Avoid this fraud and buy NOTHING. I asked directly many times if the articles that interested me had been handmade by women in Burano and was assured that they were - otherwise I would not have paid the extremely high prices asked. Imagine my dismay when I found exactly the same articles in expensive Venice for much less money.

Burano is a small island and there is not much shelter when you are walking around, so you need to prepare some gear for very hot weather (during summer months) and rain. During my visit there in June 2007, the weather was cloudy but the next day at Venice was very very hot.
