vaporetto

The best way to reach Lido is using the vaporetto, the boat service used in the lagun of Venice. There are few vaporetto lines that goes to Isola di Lido, num 52 is very good because it takes 35 minutes if you go to Santa Lucia Train Station and 10 minutes to Piazza San Marcos. Line number 1 is ok too but is allways crowed of tourist because is the one that cross gran canal and from the train station it takes about 1 hour to reach Lido, if you want to enjoy the gran canal number one is the right one. There are diferents ticktes depending how many days you are in Venice, we bought the one for 72 hours that cost 31 euros. After buying you have to validate in the machine that you find in the pier before get into the vaporetto.**

Leg paddling boats on Lido beach, Italy
1 more image

When my wife and I were at the public beach of Lido, we saw many leg paddling boats on the beach, but none were in the sea (maybe the waves were strong on that day). I think you can actually rent one of these boats and have fun on the sea, but you need to check the prices firsy (perhaps the best way is to ask the lifeguards as the lifeguard station is very near to these boats).

Interesting bicycles at Lido, Italy

When you are walking along Gran Viale Santa Maria Elisbetta (the main street of Lido linking the vaporetto (water bus) station to the public beach, you will come across a bicycle rental shop as shown in the photo. The bicycles here can seat 2 people and rather interesting with even a roof attached. You can consider taking a ride on one of these bicycles, my wife and I unfortunately did not try due to time constraints :)

A bus at Lido, Italy

Unlike Venice, there are roads and vehicles on Lido. If you are exploring the area in Lido from the vaporetto (water bus) station to the public beach, you do not need to take a bus as walking will be sufficient. However, if you are going to further away location, taking a bus or taxi is necessary. You can check out the bus services in Lido when you are at the vaporetto station there.

Walk along the beach at Lido, Italy
3 more images

It is nice to walk along the public beach of Lido especially during the warm summer months. I think you should time your visit such that you can experience the sunset while taking a walk along the beach. This will be very romantic! I tried that with my wife in June 2007, however it was cloudy that day so we did not see the sunset.

One main problem with walking along the public beach is that there are lots of shells on the beach, so it may be uncomfortable if you are walking barefoot.

A vaporetto (water bus) from Venice to Lido
3 more images

In order to reach Lido from Venice, Murano or Burano, you need to take the vaporetto (water buses). The journey from Venice to Lido takes about 10-20 minutes depending on which part of Venice you are at. For Murano and Burano, the journey will take longer because they are further away, and the vaporetto of this route are usually bigger and slower ships that carry more passengers. If you are taking the vaporetto frequently when you are at Venice, I suggest that you buy the day tickets which are much cheaper and allow unlimited travel within the time given. Below are useful information:

Vaporetto day tickets:
One way = 6 euros
12 hours = 13 euros
24 hours = 15 euros
36 hours = 20 euros
72 hours = 30 euros

Vaporetto numbers from Venice to Lido: N, 1, 6, 14, 51, 52, 62, 82
Vaporetto numbers from Murano and Burano to Lido: 12, 13

If you are not sure of the vaporetto numbers, the best way is to ask the staff at the vaporetto station where you want to go and they will tell you the best vaporetto number to take. I asked them and it always worked well.

Waterbus stop at Lido

You can easily get to Lido Island from Venice (San Marco) or other nearby islands on a boatride on the waterbus or vaporetto lines no. 1 - 52 - 6 - 14. You can also arrive from Venice airport on the public waterbus “Alilaguna” or take the bus to Venice and get on the waterbus at Piazalle Roma

Cost of ticket varies, depending on if you purchase a one-way fare, travelcard or the Venice Card. From Venice Island, it's 6 euros for a single adult fare

Gran Viale S. Maria Elisabetta

When you come out of the vaporetto stop there will be buses. You don't need one of these. Just cross the street to the island's main cut-through-to-the-beach road called Gran Viale S. Maria Elisabetta.

An easy 15 minute stroll straight through to the beach. And if you need any beach supplies: lotion, towels, etc., all these things are sold conveniently along the way...

So many 'don'ts'

We weren't sure how this all worked, very different from the seashore of New Jersey we are used to. So we just decide to go in here and see what's up.

Easy enough. For 23 euros, we got an umbrella, two chairs and passes to use the toilet/showers.

Getting to Lido

Do you want to get there fast or slow?
Know before you go, because you can get there either way, depending on which vaporetto you jump on. We wanted to get there directly. So first we take the ferry from our stop, San Toma' to the San Marco area. A little scouting around, and we find a big passenger ferry that will deliver us to Lido directly, no stops. hooray! (I think it was by San Zaccaria) First we have to wait in a huge holding pen area, which fills to overstuffed capacity before they let us board. When they open the flood gates everyone scrambles to get to the top level. Good luck. From above, on a nice day, you will have a good breeze and good photo shots.
