The bigger square in Padova and one of widest in Europe. This square have a round island in the midle, surrounded by a canal. There ae four bridges to walk through. The canal is decorated with a double ring of huge statues, 78 at all, representing famous people. The island is all green planted with nice tree. The municipality use this place to organize events, there is fireworks on new year eve and on 15 August. But it is just a very nice place to go for a walk, enjoy the green and have a coffee or an ice cream. During Saturday there are a huge market where you can find clothes, shoes, flowers and plants.

Basilica of St Anthony by sandysmith The Basilica of St Anthony is the main sight to see in Padova - in fact a place of pilgrimage for some. Its construction began immediately after the death of the Santo (1231) and completed at the beginning of the following century. This imposing basilica with its Romanesque-Gothic style, with eight domes and spires of eastern inspiration holds the body of St. Anthony and is the object of pilgrimages from all over the world.

The church of San Nicolo dates back to 1088, and its medieval appearance is almost unaltered. However, in the 14th century the height of the church was increased, as it can be noticed by the ogival vaulting in the nave. At the same time a fourth aisle was added on the south side in order to widen the building proportionately. San Nicolo was a basilica with the typical nave and two aisles. Since it is standing in the most aristocratic area of medieval Padova, San Nicolo is very rich with nobile chapels, altars and burial monuments of famous families, such as Transalgardi, Forzate and others. Arriving in Padova, (or pre-visit on line) get yourself this valuable card! For 14 Euros (2007) It entitles you to free, or reduced admission to the many attractions of Padova and its surrounding areas. Plus free travel on public APS buses and free car parking for 48 hours (or the whole weekend if purchased on a Friday) Discounted boat trips on the Brenta Canal and entrance to some of the Villas are also included A useful booklet comes with the ticket, that lists all the attractions that the card covers. Each card is valid for 1 adult and 1 child under 12. Often I find that 'discount cards' aren't really value for money, but this was well worth buying I purchased mine from the Tourist Info (TI) office opposite St Anthonys Basillica. You can also buy it from the TI office at the train station or Galleria Pedrocchi. I booked my ticket for the Scroveni chapel at the same time. This is included in the card price - I just had to pay an extra £1 booking fee. I also bought a ticket for the Padova City sightseeing bus, for 6 euros instead of 12 euros which is normally valid for 24 hours, but with the Padova card it was extended to 48 hours use! As my accommodation was out of the city centre, I used my card quite a bit on the bus. Without this card a bus ticket valid for 75 minutes was 1 euro. I also used it for free entry to the Palazzo della Ragione and The Caffe Pedrocchi. I had hoped to visit The Botanical Gardens and The Observatory, which are also included on the card, but I ran out of time. Be aware when planning Your visit to Padova that many of the museums etc close on a Monday Leave a Comment

This garden was first planted in 1545 and is said to be the oldest in Europe, and the oldest University garden in the world created for the University it originally held many rare medicinal plants known as `simples` and plants from countries that had links with the Venitian Republic the Orto Botanico is included in UNESCO`s World Heritage list the garden is laid out as a circle, divided into four quadrants, these quadrants in turn are divided into sections holding different families of plants, outside the main garden wall are conservatories and laboratories, one of the conservatories has a very interesting collection of carniverous plants, there is also an orchid house which was closed when we visited one of the pictures accompanying this tip shows the oldest plant in the garden which is a palm planted in 1585. This is known as the Goethe Palm as the German writer studied the palm and published his ideas of evolution in 1786 [well before Charles Darwin] based on those studies. The palm is enclosed by a specially built glasshouse, which looks like it will soon need enlarging this is a lovely place to stroll, with lots of shady areas for hot days. Many of the plants were past their best when we visited, but the aquatic plants were wonderful, especially the Victoria Cruziana, there are also sensory areas designed for the visually impaired with aromatic planting, and outside the walled garden an arboraetum the garden is open daily between April and October 9.00-13.00 and 15.00-18.00, and between November and March 9.00-13.00 [excluding public holidays Leave a Comment Address: via Orto Botanico 15, 35123 PadovaDirections: clost to Basilica di Sant`Antonio

Palazzo della Ragione by sandysmith This beautiful palace (reminiscent of the one in Verona) was the seat of the city courts. It was built in 1218 and its upper floor is occupied by a single hall (81 x 27 m.; 27 m. high), one of the largest hanging halls in the world, called the Salone. The Salone sits proudly between the two bustling market sqaures of Padova - Erbe and Frutta squares. It was late afternoon when I took this pic though and the markets were finished for the day.

Frescoes from the Oratory of Saint George by croisbeauty In the early aears og the 19th centurythe Oratory was trurned into the prison by Napoleon Bonaparte. The frescoes was restored in 1995, in the occasion of the eight births centenary of the Saint' Anthony. Since taking the pictures inside the Oratory isn't allowed, I took this one from outside. Tomb of Antenor by sandysmith It was said that the legendary founder of Padova, the Trojan hero Antenor, was buried in this coffin although this was later discovered not to be true. Renovations during 1985 revealed the incomplete remains of a skeleton. The examination of a bone fragment by the Department of Physics of the Arizona University in Tucson proved that the inhumed lived between the 3rd and 4th century B.C.

you know you are someone special in Padova when they erect a statue to you here ! Once this was a Roman amphitheatre, since 1775 it has been a wonderful piazza, the lagest in Europe, where a canal surrounds a grass oval crossed by paths, around the canal stand 78 white marble statues of great people from Padovas history, from a distance it looks like a gathering of pale townspeople, close to the effect is stunning now it is a place of fairs and special events, and it is used daily by the people of Padova as somewhere that children play, elderly people and footsore tourists sit and rest, and lovers meet Leave a Comment Directions: close to the Basilica of St Anthony
