The 'clock tower' dates from the early fifteenth century (1400s), making it older than the one in Venice's Piazza San Marco. A column with the lion of St Mark stands in front of the tower.
The astronomical clock is not the original one, which was made by one Jacopo Dondi in 1344, and later destroyed by fire. But it is a faithful reconstruction and very impressive anyway. It has been working again since 2010, after restorations.
The clock is surrounded by signs of the Zodiac except Libra. At the time the original clock was made the signs of Scorpio and Libra were combined.
