Exploring the town

Exploring the town, Peschiera del Garda

jamiema Says:  Peschiera is often simply used as a base for exploring the wider region of Lake Garda and Veneto, but there is in fact plenty to see in the town itself. I found that a short walk through Peschiera was enough to prove this. Start at the ancient gate over the river, next to...

bridge

bridge, Peschiera del Garda

croisbeauty Says:  This bridge across the moat, which looks like the smaller version of Ponte Scaligero in Verona, obviously served for a quick movement of the troops from one side of the fortress to another. It is situated in the close vicinity of Porta Verona.

Porta Verona

Porta Verona, Peschiera del Garda

croisbeauty Says:  Massive interiors of Porta Verona, designed by Sanmicheli who was the pupil of Palladio. It is almost twenty meters long and about 10 meters high. The entrances, however, wasn't been anticipated for such a big traffic as it is today. Since Porta is part of the main local...

La Toretta

During the summer, concerts and theatrical performances often take place inside the ancient bastions.
Besides, there are couple of disqoteques and nightclubs in the outskirt of Peschiera or its close surroundings.
Most of the tourists, however, spend there evenings and nights in the local cafe-bars, sipping some of the best Italian wines come from nearby Bardolino or Custoza. I recommend you "Chiaretto", rose wine from Bardolino, and "Biano di Custoza", white wine from Custoza.

The museum

This palace served as the residency of Italian king Vittorio Emanuele during his visits to Peschiera. Nowadays, it houses museum displaying arms and other exibits from the military history of the town.
Right opposite to it there are military barraks from Austrian period of Peschiera.

Warnings and Dangers

Watch out for traffic...

this little bay is off to your left

Traffic is traffic where ever you go, granted, but Peschiera has a very difficult intersection you must cross. If you are walking towards the centre from the train station, you must navigate this traffic circle in some fashion. The town 'centro' is to your left, and the hotel strip is towards your right...kinda.

Keep a close rein on your kids, and 'hook on' to Grandma, because figuring out how to get across takes a bit of thinking first. Study the flow of traffic for a moment, watch the lights, and above all, don't assume the cars will yield to pedestrians. There are odd angles from which vehicles may approach, plus the crosswalks are set back aways from the normal corners. We saw a couple of near misses, due to a multitude of tourists driving in unsure territory, with lots of unfamiliar street signage.. Just be cautious !!
