Palazzo dei Trecento ("Palace of the Three Hundred") was built around 1185 in order to provide a hall where public meetings with many people could take place. It was completed around 1268. Later on, it was the seat of the Tribunale dei Consoli ("Consuls' court") and of the city council. The Podestà administered justice there, so it was called Palazzo della Ragione ("Palace of Reason"). Then, it hosted the Maggior Consiglio, which had three hundred members: that explains from where its name comes. The interior rooms have beautiful frescoes, as you can see in this page. Unfortunately, I didn't see them during my visit. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza dei Signori

Right behind Piazza Monte di Pieta there is Piazza San Vito with two adjoining churches of medieval origin, Santa Lucia and San Vito. Santa Lucia is more interesting, a 14th century building containing frescoes by famous Tommaso da Modena and his school, and the 14th and 15th centuries sculptures of Saints on the balustrade. San Vito, which was built in the 11th and 12th centuries and rebuilt in 1568, conserves Byzantine-Romanesque frescoes of the 12th and 13th centuries. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza San Vito

The small square, Piazza Monte di Pieta, is situated right behind the Palazzo del Podesta. The square is named after the building of Monte di Pieta, which incorporates the 16th century Capella dei Rettori, a small chapel with gilt-leather wall coverings of the 17th century frescoes and canvases. Although this square, that is the centre of the town, can let you enjoy a medieval atmosphere, much does not look as in the Middle Ages in Piazza dei Signori. Originally, the Palazzo della Signoria of Treviso was around the half of today's palace, called Palazzo della Prefettura or del Podestà. The name of the square originates from its closeness to the palace and does not mean that it was dedicated to the rich (signore also means a rich man in Italian). Some imposing buildings surround the square. The most remarkable is the already mentioned Palazzo del Podestà, that was rebuilt in Neoromantic style in 1877 and today hosts the prefecture; the Torre Civica that stands above it was remade, as well. Next to the Palazzo del Podestà you find the Palazzo Pretorio and the Palazzo dei Trecento. Leave a Comment

Piazza dei Signori is the real heart of the town, since Roman times it is the political and social centre of Treviso. The square is located on the site of the Roman forum. The most important building on this square is the Palazzo dei Trecento, named after the 300 members of the Greater Council. It was built in 1210 and has a ground floor loggia of 1552 on the front facade. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza dei Signori

Piazza San Vito hosts two beutiful churches: on the left Chiesa di Santa Lucia and the older Chiesa di San Vito. Built in 1300 on the place where the prison of Treviso used to be, Chiesa di Santa Lucia is pretty small inside, with a low ceiling and lack of light. It is said that the chapel on the right side of the entrace, decorated with frescos dating from the 13 century, used to be the apse of the first church built here. On the right side of the church is a small door that opens in the other beautiful church, Chiesa maggiore di San Vito. The church was officially mentioned in a document dating from 883 speaking about a hospital complex named "San Pietro e San Vito", owned by the benedictins monastery of Sant'Ilario and Benedetto di Fusina. Built in Romanic style, the church was restored at the end of 16 century and its aspect changed, looking more like a palace than like a church.

The core of the city life is the area delimited by Palazzo della Prefettura, Palazzo dei Trecento and Cal Maggiore called Piazza dei Signori. The square took its name from Treviso's Palazzo della Signoria, located nearby, which was half of Palazzo del Podesta' of our days. The square is today the favorite meeting place for both locals and visitors, during weekends interesting books markets and concerts being organized here.
