On my previous trips to Venice, I've flown into Marco Polo from East Midlands airport with Easyjet.

This time, I'd opted for Ryanairs Liverpool (LPL) to Venice-Treviso (TSF) route, partly due to price ( £30 return including taxes etc. - instead of £120+) and partly because I'd been wanting to visit Treviso for quite a while. I'd decided to stop overnight, do some sightseeing then travel on to Venice the next day

    Planes depart from Liverpool (aka John Lennon or Speke) airport ;

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 17.15 and arrive at Treviso at 20.30 hours.
Treviso to Liverpool departs at 20.55 arriving at 22.15
    www.Ryanair.com for more info

Check in at least 2 hours prior to flight time.

I usually check in online (only carrying hand luggage), but still allow plenty of time as it can take quite a while to get through security checks at Liverpool. Also the airport is ever expanding and sometimes there has been a very long walk from the car park. A multi storey car park has recently opened near the arrivals/departure entrance.

The airport is 7 miles SE of Liverpool city centre

Terravision provide a bus service from the airport to/from Manchester City centre
    £6 single -5-12 years £3. £8/£3 return. 50 minute journey
    www.terravision.eu

Buses run from Liverpool train stations
For information on train times and stations, - www.traveline.org.uk or telephone Traveline on 0871 200 22 33.

http://www.liverpoolairport.com/ For all info about the airport and how to get there etc.

There is quite a good selection of shops, restaurants, bars, money exchanges, ATMs etc.
No Smoking in the airport - smoking areas outside arrivals/departures.
    Lifts and escalators.

If you arrive with plenty of time to spare the National Trusts Speke Hall is very near to the airport.

Treviso airport surprised me- I don't think that I've ever walked out of an airport, onto a main road! It had more of an appearance of a train station from the exterior!

Formerly known as Sant' Angelo di Treviso, Aeroporto di Treviso Antonio Canova (named after the local hero sculptor) serves mainly Ryanair flights from the UK and Europe.

http://www.trevisoairport.it for all airport info -Italian and English

Although Ryanair advertise it as Venice (Treviso), Venice is 19 miles away . The airport is about 3km from Treviso centre.

Outside the airport are taxis and buses. Padua, Vicenza, Asolo are within easy reach of Treviso. Verona is 2 hours away by train.
Terravision run a service to the Dolomites ( Cortina, Dobbiaco and Brunico -17 euro one way)

ATVO run bus services to Venices Piazzale Roma bus station (40 - 70 minutes, depending on traffic volume) which co-incide with the Ryanair flights - if the flight's delayed the coach waits.
    http://www.atvo.it/orari/pdf_airport/Ryanair.pdf. for timetables etc.

Return tickets are valid for 7 days. Buy in the arrivals hall. You must validate your ticket prior to boarding.
There is an ATVO office in Piazzale Roma to purchase tickets. You can't buy tickets from the driver.
D2 is the stop to look for when returning.
Some services stop in Mestre, others go direct to Pz Roma.

Local bus service (ACTT) run buses into Treviso and the train station (15 minutes). www.actt.it.

I caught the number 6 bus to the train station from just outside the airport (Leave through exit to your right, and the bus shelter is to your right on Via Noalise) - I bought a ticket in the arrivals hall for 1 euro (2 euros from the driver) and validated it on the bus. The ticket is valid for 70 minutes.
This bus continues to Piazza Duoma after the train station)

Regular trains run to Venice (about 30 minutes) for about 2.5 euros. The last train is after 23.30

If you're planning to look around Treviso on the way too/ from Venice etc the left luggage office in the train station charges 3 euros for each item. The centre is within easy walking from the train station.

On my return to Treviso airport, I caught a taxi from the train station for 15 euros

The airport itself was updated in 2007, with a new terminal building.
There is a small duty free shop with a limited selection of perfumes, spirits, wines, cigarettes and gifts, but not a lot to do while waiting.

I quite enjoyed a bowl of pasta from the cafe before going through security. It was cooked in front of me!- Later I enjoyed a coffee from a stand near passport control.

My only quibble was the long time waiting at the gate for departure, luckily I managed to grab one of the few seats available. It was quite a crush under the stairwell, where we had to wait. I had to laugh when I noticed that one of the passengers standing in the queue had a copy of 'War and Peace'- I couldn't resist sneaking a quick photo- errr no, he didn't finish it before we boarded- but it WAS a long wait!

The small San Giuseppe Airport is located in via Novalese 63, 3 km away of the city walls.

This airport is mainly used by low cost and charter flights to and from London (Ryan Air), Paris, Canarie Islands and Amsterdam as it is only half an hour away from Venice.

There is a direct bus from the train station to the airport, but I always prefered to take a taxi which, considering also the short distance, is convenient.

The only problem is at the arrival to Treviso, as there are no taxis in the airport and you have to order by phone.

  • Treviso has a small international airport, which is served by Ryanair. A bus run by local firm ACTT (number 6) stops on Via Noalese outside the airport and runs to Treviso railway station. Tickets cost €1 if you buy them inside the airport, or €2 from the driver.

  • Ryanair Treviso/Venice is a very good connection where you can travel to Venice by taking a Ryanair flight to Treviso which is only 30 min by train away from Venice and while in Treviso, why not, visit Treviso as well. Check out www.ryanair.com and find flights with very good rates.

Only half an hour by train separates Treviso from Venice.

Today, due to its location and the existence of the airport, Treviso is an important connection point between different cities in Italy and foreign countries.

The train station is on the southern side of Treviso's old town and close to Piazza dei Signori.

For the travelers in transit, the station offers luggage boxes and easy access to the town.

  • Treviso is an old walled city with a labyrinth of small narrow one-way streets. There is a belt-loop road the circles the city wall. Parking on the outside of this is free, while inside the city is limited space and you must pay. Not only that, but the one-way streets and dead ends are difficult to navigate if you don't know the city. Treviso is small enough that you can easily walk from any city gate to your destination or take a bus once inside.

As in other Italian cities, a bus fare in Treviso costs EUR 1- and the ticket is valid for 75min from the validation.

Piazza dei Signori is free of traffic but the buses are stopping in the nearby Piazza del Duomo.

The tickets can be bought from the hotels reception.

I found the taxis in Treviso not as expensive as in other cities in Italy and at the end they were the only convenient way of transportation.

As the buses usually run until 9:30 pm, in case you want to spend more time in town, the taxi is the only option to go back to the hotel.

Pay attention while driving around Treviso's ring!

Entering Treviso’s beautiful historical centre is little complicated. Once I remember it to be easy, but now no more. A “ring street” surrounding the heart of the city was built, which is a nightmare!
Be aware of it while arriving there by car. You cannot enter the historical centre of Treviso directly, you must drive around the ring until you reach the right gate. All signs are in Italian of course, and they are quite difficult to understand. There is always a lot of traffic around the ring, so be aware because there are frequently car accidents. If you are not sure which is the right exit you are looking for, follow the “Tutte le direzioni” sign (= to all directions). If you need to go to the railway station coming from the motorway A27 exit, you need to make almost the whole round before finding the right gate.

  • The airport is on the southwest side of town. The train station is on the south of town.

They are about 3.5 km apart from each other and will be ~10 minutes in a taxi.
