    The Venice Carnival

    by shiran_d Written Jun 14, 2003

Use of masks in Venice dates back to 2nd May 1268.

This restrictive carnival legislation started with a decree on 22nd February 1339 prohibiting masqueraders from going around the city at night.

The drink of Carnevale is "Bellini", a peach flavored sorbet. Tents are set up in San Marco which sell Bellini, and spiced wine, by the cup or bottle. (We chose bottle!).

This is the Dottore delle Peste, Plague doctor, one of the more sinister costumes worn by revellers in the Carnival.
