Churches: Madonna dell'Orto (I&V)

    Madonna dell'Orto (from
    Fondamenta dei Mori)

Madonna dell'Orto, one of the most beautiful "hidden" churches in Venice and "one of the greatest expressions of the Venetian Gothic" is settled in quiet and peaceful northern Cannaregio district. It was built in late 14th and reconstructed during 15th century. Originally dedicated to St Cristopher, the church changed its name because an ancient statue of Virgin, found in a nearby garden and considered to be miraculous, was brought there. The portal of the church is decorated with statue of St Christopher Carrying the Christ Child and twelve statues of the Apostles above it. There is a legend about one of thirty silver coins, Judas’ award for betraying Christ, being there, inside the sculpture of Judas.

Madonna dell'Orto is the best known for the works of Jacopo Robusti called Tintoretto. Tintoretto lived nearby the church, he had been a parishioner of Madonna dell’Orto and, finally he had been buried in it. Tintoretto's six large canvases and four smaller ones are in Madonna dell'Orto. Eight of them are in the Chancel – all of the four smaller and the four of the large ones – "Moses Receiving the Tables of the Law", "The Last Judgment", "The Martyrdom of St Paul" and "The Vision of St Peter". The remaining two are the oldest one – "The Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple" and the one painted the last – "The Miracle of St Agnes". Tintoretto's paintings in Madonna dell'Orto were made during the period of about 25 years.

Even in treasure box such as Venice, Madonna dell'Orto is very special jewel and it must not be missed.

An hidden jewel you can't lose, one of the most romantic building of this city...
Go to Campo Manin, at the centre of the square look for a yellow sign and follow it... you will arrive in a small street ("Corte Contarini del Bovolo") and you will find this marvellous building, with the great winding staircase. It has a Renaissaince aspect with some Byzantine particular.

This building is open from 10am to 4 pm only on saturday and sunday. From above, you can see a magnificent view of San Marco's Church. The entrance fee is 3 euro.

    San Pietro di Castello

Church San Pietro di Castello is on the island San Pietro di Castello – isolated and peaceful part of Venice. There were church at the same place since 7th century, first dedicated to SS. Sergio and Bacco, and then it seems that it was rebuilt by Bishop Magnus in honour of St Peter, and, in honour of the island, it was named San Pietro di Castello. San Pietro di Castello was the he Cathedral of Venice until 1807, when the title passed to St Mark’s. After several reconstructions, it was "redesigned" by Andrea Paladio in 1596. Paintings in this church are made by Tizian, Paolo Caliari Veronese, Alessandro Varotari Padovanino, Marco Basaiti…

There is so-called Throne of St Peter, presented to the Doge by Byzantine Emperor Michael III, in San Pietro di Castello. This throne, according to legend, was used by St Peter during his apostolic mission to Antioch of which he was the first bishop. Throne of St Peter plays an important role in Corto Maltese’s adventure in Venice.

San Pietro di Castelo church is on the east side of Venice, and it can be reached by vaporetto ("San Pietro" station), or walking about 10 minutes north-east from Giardini.

    Arsenale: Arsenale
  • Tip Rating:
  • Long time constructed the economic centre of the city of the arsenals, Venice's big shipyard.
Here, was built, equipped and repaired, from the 12th century, the famous Venetian long ships.
The word Arsenale comes, from the Arabic concept Dar Sina'a (job).
During the prime was active here, 16,000 workers, that was able to build within few hours, a whole ship.
In the year 1917, the shipyard was shut down.
Arsenale is, still, with few exceptions, military prohibited area.
The big Corderia, serves as showroom during the Biennale.
The mighty gate of Gambello, Venice's first classic renaissance construction, was built in the year 1460.
Two of the four lions, to both sides of the gate came in the year 1687, from Athens to Venice.
Corderia is open to the visitors, while the Biennale for exhibitions.

    Murano: Murano
  • Tip Rating:
  • Murano is just a mile north of Venice - so no excuses for not visitng whilst here. Its actually a cluster of 5 islets, linked by bridges. The famous venetain glassware can be seen in workshops here - thats the touristic bit - but also just wander around the canals and take in the views. Its a miniature version of Venice and much more peaceful! We stayed on Murano for 4 nights in July 2004 so please see my Murano page for more details and info.

Burano: Colors colors and more colors!

  • If you are considering a day trip in the laguna islands, then Burano is a must. This small fishermen village is so different than Venice that it almost feels it is in another country. The houses are all painted in very bright colors making the whole experience of walking in Burano a treat for the eyes.

    some tips :

    1. Try to get there very early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the light is warm but not too 'hard'. Your resulting pictures will be the stuff of legend. If you like taking pictures, dont miss Burano at its best (btw, my pic is a bad example.. it was taken around 1pm in May!)

    2. on the way to Burano, get out of the vaporetto at the Mazzorbo stop. From there you can walk to Burano (5-10 minutes) and it's a nice quiet way to start your visit of the island (instead of being herded like cattle at the Burano dock)

    3. if you can, bring a picnic on Burano and eat it in the park near the vaporetto dockings or on the edge of Mazzorbo island. Restaurants can be found on Burano but they are mainly of the tourist types and are not that great anyways.

    Burano: Burano
  • Tip Rating:
  • If I had to choose between the islands to visit in the northern lagoon Burano would be my number one choice. Its so idyllic just to stroll around the maze of narrow streets "calli" and banks "fondamente" on small canals taking in the colourful views of this fishing and lace island. More info on my Burano page.

    Burano: Burano
  • Tip Rating:
  • Burano is my favourite part of the Venice complex, in fact it is the only part of the town which I really love. I still remember my first visit to Burano, which was over 25 years ago, when the place was less touristic and less crowded of course. You could walk around, meet the locals everywhere and talk to them openly. Now you cannot see old fishermen around, seat and chat with them and sipping home-made wine which was usually offered by them.

    Churches: Santa Maria dei Miracoli
  • Tip Rating:
  • Santa Maria dei Miracoli has suffered from rising damp - hardly surprising considering its position surrounded by water -and has undergone restotation many a time. This "jewellery box" of a church is adorned with marble slabs and bas-relief thanks to its designer Pietro Lombardo (built 1481-9).The marble used for the church is said to have been that left over from the building of St. Mark’s Cathedral.

The interior is just as ornate and I could just imagine a long wedding train sweeping up those steps to the altar - truly a romatic setting for a wedding. Its name derives from miracle working icon - enshrined in the main altar - said to have resucitated a drowned man.

    Other Islands: Tranquil Torcello
  • Tip Rating:
  • Torcello is probably the quietest of the island on the Murano, Burano, Torcello tour. Its sleep air and delightful churches are a delight to explore - make sure you climb the Bell tower for fine views across the lagoon.
The mosaics in th church are some of the finest you'll see too (see my Torcello page for more). Several restaurants are here including the renowned locanda Cipriani so it makes a good lunch stop on the island tour.
