Churches: Sant'Alvise
Very plain on the outside, but worth seeking out for it's interesting trompe-l'oeil ceiling, which dates from the 17th century. I've seen some stunning trompe'oeil work in Rome (notably the ceiling of the Gesu) but this one really is rather clever. The painted, twisted columns seem to become part of the fabric of the church when one sits in the nave.

Sant'Alvise was built in the late 1380's. It has a couple of Tiepolo paintings as well as a series of smaller ones under the nun's choir gallery which probably date from the late 1400s.

Sant'Alvise is in the north of Cannaregio (it is dedicated to St Louis of Toulouse, 'Alvise' being Venetian dialect for 'Louis').

Churches: San Giobbe
The church of San Giobbe (St Job) is in northern Cannaregio, quiet, off th tourist track and really rather pleasant.

Originally part of a Franciscan monastery (you can still see the cloisters at the side of the church), it dates from the thirteeth-century. There is also some beautifully-carved Medieval stonework around the doorway (by Lombardo).

There are several side-chapels inside, including one decorated with rather nice ceramic tiles and roundels from Florence (the della Robbia workshop). There's a Doge buried under the chancel: Cristoforo Moro, on whom Shakespeare's Othello may have been based, and some rather odd marble creatures at the base of a French ambassador's tomb (1651).

The nicest, most atmospheric part of the church is the sacristy: wood-panelled and painted, with some rather lovely paintings by Vivarini and Previtali.

Worth seeking out: it's nice little church.
