every picture tells a story , don't it?

Luggage and bags: One rolling bag per person. The pulling of one of these over a series of bridges will leave you at your wits end.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: If you must wear those awful white Nikes that look like boats with two legs attached try to wear nice slacks along with them. You can always tell the americans because they look like they are on the way to the gym and 75 lbs overweight.
I hear that rubbers are great for when the Square floods.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Have sinus meds, bug repelent in summer, and things for upset stomach.

Photo Equipment: Have more film than you expect. Digital card should hold hundeds of photo. And don't be shy of taking them. Everyone in Venice is taking pictures to show back home.

If there is any chance of rain...

Miscellaneous: If there is any chance of rain, bring an umbrella. Since the umbrella will be turned, twisted and possibly blown away, bring either two or three cheap ones or a good one. I bought the Jack Wolfskin umbrella for hiking, which doesn't mind getting turned or twisted. This is not just good for Venice in rain, of course, but also for any outdoor activity in autumn in Germany.

A compass!

Miscellaneous: I laughed when my boyfriend told me he meant to bring a compass to Venice but that he had forgotten it. But actually, it would have been a very good idea! The streets are quite narrow and maze-like, and I found it very difficult to get my bearings. So, if you want to get from one place to another as quickly as possible, or if you want to try and follow a walking tour on a map, a compass might be useful. Otherwise, just give in and enjoy not quite knowing where you are as you wander around!

Be prepared!

Be prepared in Winter

Luggage and bags: Make a note of exactly where your accommodation is located.
Will you be spending a lot of money on a water taxi to take you as near as possible?
If not you will have to drag your luggage across bridges, through squares and down alleys. Wheels on your case are a must and travel as light as possible if this is how you plan to get to your accommodation. One big case with wheels and a little backpack is fine.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Bring some wellies from home just in case Venice floods if you're going in that time of year. At least then you won't be confined to the duck boards with everyone else.

Also, comfy shoes or trainers as you'll be doing a lot of walking.

If you're going in winter take a hat, it can be bitterly cold, especially sightseeing out on the boats. The trip to Burano (1hr) was f-f-f-freezing.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: There are shops to buy this sort of thing. A lot of hotels will supply you with shampoos etc if you don't want to carry them in your case.

Photo Equipment: Make sure you've got plenty of film or cards for your digital camera.

Miscellaneous: A good guidebook with a good map for navigating the alleyways and help you locate anywhere you're planning to visit.

I have a fantastic guidebook from Everyman which has fold out maps of each district with useful information on tourist sites, cafes, shopping etc. The book code is ISBN: 1841590584. I wouldn't be without it, it goes with me every year.

Mosquito attack!!

Luggage and bags: What you pack is what you carry as there is no one to carry it for you, and it can quite a walk from the Vaporetto to you hotel. If you are bringing heavy bags make sure with wheels ;)

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Summer- shorts, skirts, shorts sleeves. No jacket needed. Make sure to bring shorts or skirts that go below the knees and wear a shirt that covers your shoulders or you won't be able to enter any of the churches. Sandals(comfy of course) are best. Any heels can kill your feet after the first hour and unbalance you on the Vaporettos.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Bring your own Shampoo, Conditioner, Soap, Lotion, razors and shower shoes. I did not see any convience stores.
As the sun goes down the MOSQUITO rule. So I would defently bring a bug repelant. I wish I was forwarned as I was mosquito bait and have a million bites. Benedryl Itch stopping cream is wonderful!

Photo Equipment: A Camera with Zoom capability is a must.

Miscellaneous: Bring a good bug repellent. Mosquitos rule Venice when the sun starts setting and well into the night as the nights are warm too. This tip is for summer months.

Bring a CAMERA!

Photo Equipment: What ever you do you should bring a camera. Bring/Buy/Beg/Borrow/Steal one, just have it and take pictures liberally.

It doen't matter if you are using disposable and are the worst at taking pictures, every corner, every inch of the city is photogenic. As for the pictures, they have a way of turning out beautifully no matter what.

Winter colds

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Bring your medicines and cough syrup especially if you are not accustomed to the cold weather. It was in Nov and I developed the colds - maybe from germs from the EURail plus the weather factor. It is so warm (heater at max) inside the trains, hotels, but once you go out, it is sooo cold... body temps change in an instant..

Pack light!!!!!!! Do not forget your walking shoes

Luggage and bags: Do not bring "trolley bags" you will regret yourself. Venice is all about walking! Where the boats drops you off even tho it seems closed to your hotel you will need to walk up the stairs over the bridges - many many times!!

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Walking shoes!!

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: I didn't miss any thing special just had the "normal" stuff with me

Photo Equipment: If you have a digitalcamera - bring extra cards, charger for the battery and extra batter because you will USE them all!
Venice is so amazingly beautiful that you will like to take pictures around every corner!!

Miscellaneous: A windjacket can be useful as well as a warm sweather at night

Packing Checklist

hhhmmm...did I pack my passport...

Luggage and bags: If you are like the majority of (budget) travellers in Venice - make sure if you have a suitcase it not only has wheels, but that you are strong enough to carry/drag it up and down stairs/over bridges as you wander around for ages looking for your hotel...

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Comfy shoes are a must for Venice's cobble stoned streets....and you will do A LOT of walking here. You may want to bring something a little nicer to wear out at night, but don't plan on walking too far in your stilettos!

Photo Equipment: You will need as many spare digital camera cards or films as you can pack....Venice is so amazing....and ever corner you turn brings with it another photo opportunity.... click!

Fancy clothes everywhere

Luggage and bags: Perhaps your plan was to take small bag with neccessery things and make shopping in Venice.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Well, Venice isn't an ideal place for shopping, especially to those who use to go round in between shops.
There are excellent clothing and shoe shops in Venice but scattered all over the town and it is almost impossible to make a comparations between the two items. It looks like a game, "now you see me, now you not." Besides, the prices in Venice are much higher then in other places.

Photo Equipment: Some of the shops are well equiped, some not. When you see what you need, just go in and buy, if not you may have problem to locate where the shop was.
