Breks: A simple, self serve restaurant
Breks is a simple and cheap place to eat. Food is OK, not great, but beats many high priced eateries scattered throughout Venice.
They offer 'stations' at which you place your order. Steak, chicken, and pork are standard, and is grilled right in front of your eyes, as are vegetables.
Pasta is always offered, usually includes a minimum of three choices, and you may mix and match. You also watch it being prepared. Service is adequate, but a tad slow, but food is always fresh.
You pour your own wine, collect your own cutlery, and stack your food on trays and pay at the back. Buns cost extra, and are tasteless, so unless you need bread with your pasta, give them a pass. Last visit Ma Kettle and I ate for less than eleven euro, including wine.
Favorite Dish: All dishes are freshly made in front of you, that is the most important thing. Plus, seating at tables away from stinky canals, with A/C in summer, and access to relatively clean washrooms are wonderful pluses.
Cafeteria style, no ambience, but they also serve American style breakfasts.

Brek cafeteria: More affordable food
We went to the Brek caferteria one night for a sit down meal. There was an area in the front of the building for stand up snacks. Toward the back is the the restaurant. There is a service line which has pastas, meats grilled while you wait, soups, salads, desserts, fruits. Across the room, toward the cash register, there is wine and beer on tap. One loads up one's food, stops for a drink of choice, and goes to the cash register. Beyond the cash register are the tables. One can be as extravagant or as frugal as needed. We spent 40E because each of us got two beers thinking that the other person would not! So 4 beers, one soup, 2 pastas, one pork chop (brined - looked and tasted like ham), bread, and a large salad = 40E. This is a HUGE amount of food (and drink) for the money in Venice. Open 1130 - 2230 hrs
Favorite Dish: The pasta and the soup were quite good but we have no idea what they were. The service personnel do not speak English and of course, I do not speak Italian, so one orders in "point".

Brek: Simple Inexpensive Sustanence
If you have ever been to a Brek, you know what a retreat this place is from the rest of the exhorbant prices in Venice. Brek is a cafeteria style place that is great for those on a budget. There are many locations all over Italy, Venice being one of them.
The place is clean and the facilities are adequate. Food is very predictable from each location of Brek. It's a great place to have an inexpensive breakfast and lunch. Lots and lots of students and backpackers tend to fill the place up during all hours of the day.
Favorite Dish: The salads are usually fresh and paninis are great for breakfast. The pizza is pretty tasty too.

BREK RISTORANTE: cheap coffee every morning
Brek Ristorante was our quick stop every morning for the first coffee of the day. The prices are really low and I noticed many locals too before heading to their jobs. Cappuccino costs only 1.10euro, café latte 1.40e, and there is a nice variety of sandwich for 3.20-4euro. In the middle of the day they offer some basic plates for extremely cheap prices. The quality isn’t high and the environment not fancy of course but if you want to fill your hunger without paying a fortune this is your place.
I tried pasta for 3.90euro and lasagne bolonese for 5euro. There was another offer that you could take 2 types of pasta for 5.80euro. We tried also some potatoes with vegetables which wasn’t good (3euro) and salad. You can wash them down with coka cola (2.30euro), beer etc Tap water is for free of course.
Brek: Reasonable restaurant
About 100 meter east of the St. Lucia railway station on the main road to San Marco, selfservice restaurant and small food shop, 3 course meal for € 7,50, pasta from € 4,50, 1/4 liter open wine € 1,70 bottled wine from € 2,70.
Favorite Dish: I had a risotto mare witch was quite good,

Brek Cafe: Quick Inexpensive Lunch
Nice place to grab a quick sandwich or go to the back of the restaurant and choose from a variety of hot pasta!
It's a nice place to have lunch when you get off the train. Stop here and eat while you wait for the train crowd lines to subside at the vaporetto ticket window.
Favorite Dish: I enjoyed the sandwiches.
Brek Ristorant: No nasty surprises when the bill comes......
The ambience is very casual but very Italian. All in all quite a comfortable place to eat, though nothing fancy.
Favorite Dish: The fare is quite basic and very good. Pastas, soups, pizza, salads, bread, sweets, drinks etc. What makes it so special is that it is self service and each item has its own clearly marked price. Thus you know what the bottom line is going to be before you reach the cashier. It is very good value by any standards, but most especially when compared to prices in Venice.
Brek Cafe: One of few Cheap Eats!
To the immediate left of the Venice's Santa Lucia train station, this is one of the few restaurants where you can eat cheaply in Venice. The front has fresh sandwiches, pastries, and espresso. The back has a cafeteria-style restaurant which offers four different cooked-to-order pasta selections as well as a full salad bar. Eat here before wandering towards San Marco and Ponte il Realto.
Favorite Dish: Any pasta selection with a side of fresh grilled vegetables will fill you up for about 5 euro.

Brek: Good fresh food
There is a chain of very good cheap self-service cafeteria type restaurants that I can recommend for a large main meal in the middle of the day. It is called Brek.
In Venice it looks like a regular stand-up coffee place from the street. One has to walk into it and go to the back to find the cafeteria.
At lunch time the food is always fresh, well cooked and tasty. There is a limited choice of maybe 3 main dishes. All are served with veggies and bread. Deserts and drinks available.
They have branches in a number of cities.
After getting food poisoning in a fancy restaurant that I had treated myself to, I ate no where else but in Brek!
They have a small garden in back where one can smoke.
Favorite Dish: I had fish with pasta, a salad and bread. Coffee and desert. The price was the best I found anywhere in Italy and the food tasty and well cooked.
Brek Ristorante: Cheap and tasty in Venice
Brek Ristorante is cheap and affordable with good food. One can have meats grilled, pastas and sauces cooked and pizzas garnished and tossed into an oven all fresh and all right in front of your eyes. There are different stations for whatever one craves, all one does is stand and watch the cooks as they prepare everything right when you order. One can have an appetizer, entree and a beer for around 10 euros. The food is basic and good, better than some restaurants found in touristy piazzas all over Italy. There is no coperto and you don't have to tip any waiters.
You can find Brek Ristorante in lots of big cities in Italy. I also ate at one in Padua and Florence, Padua being the bigger and better one of the three that I ate at, and I saw one in Rome. I recommend Brek to all my friends that travel to Italy.
Brek Ristorante: Cheap, cheerful, and good food too!
This self-service cafeteria restaurant is just along Rio Terra from Santa Lucia Train Station. It has a good selection of pasta dishes, salads and cold dishes, paninnis and pizzas. Add a carafe of wine and dessert and you have a good filling meal. Not for gourmets perhaps, but an excellent choice for the budget traveller.
Brek Ristorante: Cheap and tasty
After several disappointments at more expensive restaurants in Italy this restaurant was a relief. You see what you order and you watch while it's being made and put on your plate. The food is cheap as is the wine. I and my family liked it. What a pity we discovered it our last day in Venice. However my spouse complained about the dirty toilet. But I still want to recommend this restaurant.
Favorite Dish: Pasta.
Brek Ristorante: A real find
Not only is food good, there is free wi-if. If you are lucky enough to visit, please try the hot chocolate. It is like a dessert. Thick, creamy and delish. Not the typical ... Hot water added variety.
Brek: Have a Brek
Handy location and cheap prices. Kind of like an indoor rosticceria. This is a major chain with branches all over Italy. I still love them though, they’re reliable and keep the costs down while still kind of eating out. And they don’t feel too canteen-like
Favorite Dish: The quiche and the salads
