Venice is the place to go to eat sea food - it is all so fabulous and fresh! Whilst you are roaming around in Venice you will no doubt stumble across one of the fish markets dotted around the city. There is a large one early in the day in the Dorsoduro, and a few stalls can also be found in Campo Santa Margherita (where this picture was taken). The main fish market or pescaria is located just near the Rialto bridge in San Polo. It has been in operation for 700 years! As many had pointed on VT and everywhere else – the only way to see the Venice is to walk, walk, walk… all over it. It could be very nice to get lost in the labyrinth of narrow Venetian streets, but sometimes is good to know the exact location or something great, important, interesting… just around the corner, could be missed. Therefore the map is needed. Venice de Agostini Street Map is an excellent pick. It is huge, it has booklet with place name index and all the public buildings are marked. Besides that it is pretty easy to unfold it and to fold it again.
Although the price of about 6 Euros may seem a bit on the high side, the map is worth of that, or even more comparing it to the other maps. Leave a Comment

A small shop run by father and son who both still practice the art of making hand made masks. They also restore antique furniture. I arrived there after a very long walk, actually looking for another shop in the Dorsoduro area but I didn't find it. Cavalier senior was sitting in his shop, working on a mask, smoking a fat cigar. The shop was completely full, you could not have entered with two persons. ^ ^ ^ Don't forget: 3 more photo's to see in this tip! Fortunately he spoke French and so we chatted while he carried out some articles to put on show outside his shop, thus creating room to actually be able to reach for the masks which were displayed on the wall. He pushed aside the masks he was working on on his already too full worktop and displayed the ones I had chosen. He had many photos on the wall of himself with famous people like actors and politicians and he showed me an article in a Dutch glossy magazine that mentions his shop and artistry.
There are basically two kinds of Venetian masks. One is the carnival masks with all the fancy lace, colours and shapes. Then there are the traditional masks: Commedia dell'Arte which have to do with theatre. They have fixed shapes and represent different characters such as Arlecchino, Capitano, Pulcinello or Diavolo.
For a hand made mask made of papier mache with real gold leaf paper, which as a whole costs a month to make, one pays between 80 and 95 euro. You can find cheap masks all over the streets and alleys of Venice but beware: you may find a sticker with 'made in China' on it. Same as with the watercolour prints, I came across this shop already on my first evening in Venezia. My attention was drawn by the big glass vase in murrini (= millefiori) style (photo 3). This is not necessarily a style I would put into my appartment, but I was admiring the design. They also had a nice set of necklace and earrings with Murano pearls, very much unusual in style (thus something I liked). So I was passing this shop again and again on my walks through Venezia, and after having visited Murano and the museum, I roughly had an idea of what to buy (and what would be Chinese faked crap). I realised that this shop sold originals, and was also amazed about the prices, which seemed to be fair, despite its proximity to Piazza San Marco and on my last day I went to buy my souvenirs and gifts. I bought pendants for the girls in the office and lab, and for me as well, and I also bought that set of necklace I saw on my first evening.
As a colleague of mine had just married, so I bought him and his wife an object called “Murano Love Knot” (no photo, just the website, as I kept it wrapped for being sent to him). The ones, they have in the shop, are much better worked out, the knot being a real one. Available in several different colours, they are approximately 15 cm in height and come to 35 Euro (the one on the website is said to be filled with gold, what makes it more expensive). The necklace (photo 1) is made of typical Murano pearls (yes, they come in squares), partly in venturina style (copper, which makes up the brownish glitter), and was 55 Euro together with matching earrings. The pendants (photo 2) were 3 – 7 Euro, depending on their size (the biggest in the photo is 3x3 cm). I can highly recommend this shop, if you stay close to Piazza San Marco and are day tourist.
The shop is run by two lovely ladies, English spoken, all credit cards accepted. It is also open on Sundays. Directions: you cant miss it, it is only 20 metres away from Piazza San Marco on your right, if you walk north through the gate of Tore Orologico. The Rialto Market is a nice outdoor market where fresh fruits and vegetables are traded. Despite of its relatively neigbourhood to the Rialto Bridge, it still doesn't seem to be overcrowded by tourists. Just adjacent to the outdoor market the fish market (Peschiera) can be found. It is located in an old market hall. Directions: The Rialto Market and the fish market (Peschiera) are held only 5 minutes on food from the Rialto Bridge. They are situated at Campo San Giacomo and Campo della Pescheria in the San Polo district. Leave a Comment Theme: Food and Drink

The "local custom" called spritz seems to be very popular. So popular that drinking it is not enough :-) Spritz T-shirt could be a nice souvenir from Venice. It can be found on Campo Francesco Morosini. Leave a Comment Theme: Gifts

This shop is truly special because it was this man, the owner, who first resurrected the practice of making masks in Venice after it had died out a couple centuries ago. He makes masks using the same high-quality process they used in the 1700's, when Venetians actually wore masks on a regular basis (as opposed to hanging them on the wall, like we do now). So if you're looking for an authentic remembrance instead of a cheap souvenir, this is the place for you. It was quite amusing to hear him speak with such disdain of certain unnamed mask-makers around town who dry their masks with a blow-dryer! Obviously this is NOT the traditional method!
Prices vary a lot with design and size, but I can tell you it costs a lot if you want it mailed home instead of taking it back yourself. One woman I know had her medium-sized mask mailed back to the U.S. and the shipping alone cost 45 Euros. Closed Sundays. Along the Strada Nouve there are many tempting cake shops displaying their array of tasty looking sweet cakes and pastries.
Too many to choose from - the ones with pistacchio nuts in looked wonderful but the one I sampled was almost like a lemon meringue pastry that just melted in the mouth - nearly choked on the copious amount of icing sugar coating on it though!
2-3 euros, not expensive Theme: Food and DrinkAddress: strada nuove

We've been to a couple of bigger stores - and you'd notice that quality of the craft they have is almost the same everywhere. Each store carry a number of really tacky, cheap items, many mediocre ones, and finally a good-sized selection of the best local craft. This place had been the one that was the most reasonably priced - also offered the best discounts when we bargained.
Murano glass items - vases, clocks, wine bottle caps, etc... There are also lots of rings, bracelets or pendants made out of lively colored glass. If that's not your thing, you can choose from many of the carnival masks... Many different designs and sizes... There was also a corner filled with porcelain dolls and Burano lacework...
You can expect to spend from 5 to 600 euros(or more!). Leave a Comment Theme: Local CraftAddress: Calla Larga, San Marco.Directions: Find the closest McDonalds (but never go in there!) to Piazza San Marco, take a right, walk straight ahead till you reach a small bridge and dead-end!
