    Inside Basilica San Marco

by maritoni Written Mar 25, 2005

There is a line to get in - for free but for an extra 2Euro, you can enter the intereor and see the huge Christ Panocrator. The great Basilica is one of the world's finest medieval buildings... indeed beautiful inside..... Oh, dress appropriately inside as there is a GUARD checking what people are wearing upon entry to the basilica. Covered arms and legs.

This extraordinary cathedral reminds somehow on a turkish or jewish church.
It has 5 domes that are marshaled as a cross. I'm sure the inside is beautiful, too, though I've never seen it. The tourist queue has always been much too long!!!

This is the main focal point of St Marks square, you may have to wait for awhile to go inside but it is worth the wait.
As the tide comes in they put planks out for you to be still able to wait without getting your feet wet.

    St. Mark's Bascilica

This great example of Byzantine architecture is full of mosiacs. You cannot take pictures inside, but just walking through is nice. You can go up to a museum, but I wasn't able to do that. I believe the original horses are up there too.

We were truly impressed by the amazing gold mosaics that cover the whole ceiling with scenes from Bible. We paid the extra fee to go upstairs to see the restored original bronze horses and get a great view of Plaza San Marco.

    Basilica de San Marco

by GeoDenia Written Aug 4, 2003

San Marco has to be one of the most spectacular houses of worship in the world, attesting to the Venetian Republic's former maritime and commercial might. The basilica is famous for its golden mosaics, particularly those above the doorways in the facade and decorating the interior domes. The interior is indeed dazzling: if you can take your eyes off the glitter of the mosaics, take time to admire the 12th-century marble pavement.

It is unique, colorful, full of details, you will be in awe when you see it. Worth the walk, worth the detour. Make sure you wear the proper attire to visit inside. I didn't know and I was denied entry.

Visit the Basilica of San Marco
Italy is full of wonderful cathedrals and churches, but this one has no equal. This is where the remains of the apostle Mark are reputed to be. There is an awesome aura of spirituality in San Marco that cannot be described, just felt.

Once you go upstairs in St Mark's Basilica to a separate gallery, don't miss an opportunity to go outside. The views of the Piazza and the water are spectacular.

You can't fail to miss the impressive mosaics on the outside of the Basilica. Most of them date from the 17th and 18th Century. This mosaic is the one above the doorway.

The five portals of the Basilica will show you some magnificant decorations of the bible.
It was a honour for the Doge (on the left) - dressed always in a red robe to be on this mosaic

The prinicpal facade measures 51.80 metres in height, with 5 entrance doors in Romanesque style with oblique arching. There are 3 bronze pillars in front of the Basilica. Very impressive.
