The airport of Venice is not situated in the city, but it is located in Tessera; not far from Mestre.
On www.veniceairport.it you can find lots of info about this airport; air companies and also various tourist information.

We had the hotel call a taxi (one with wheels) and the taxi driver was there when we got down to the desk. We were at the airport by 5:35 for an 8 am flight. The check-in desk for Iberia (which was the airline we were on) was not open yet, so we waited for her to open.
When we checked in (and we were flying business class this time because there were no other seats available, so this part of the trip was almost more expensive than the cruise), the girl told us that we could go and wait in the Marco Polo lounge.
The Marco Polo lounge proved to be a boon - they had bathrooms, a TV with the news (in Italian of course, although I could see that Charlton Heston had died), and an internet cafe although I did not try to use it as I think you had to pay. They also had food and drink, so we got our beverage of choice and some rolls to eat. I put some coins (I think 1 or 2 €) in the change jar. We ate breakfast and watched the sun come up over the lagoon.

we take flight from marcopolo aeroporto of venice on the way home to london, england. and it must be joking [we say that] since the check-in counter officer said "it's overbooked" whenever we got stop-over in zurich, switzerland. what? of course we're insisted since the status is "okay" and after quarrel and takes about an hour or so, voila! "please boarding immediately". thank you, thank you, thank you!

I have visited Venice several times now, the first few times arriving by train from another Italian city. More recently I have flown direct from London Gatwick to Marco Polo, Venice's main airport. I have travelled with Easyjet, and the flight takes around 2 hours.
Marco Polo is around 20-30 minutes drive from the centre of Venice. There is a shuttle bus that departs from the front of the terminal, or if you prefer to arrive in style, walk down to the dock and catch one of the public ferries, or even better, a water taxi.
Some budget airlines fly into Treviso airport, which is actually located about a 1 hour drive from the centre of Venice. You can catch a shuttle bus from here, which coincides with flight arrivals.

If you want to come by plane, depending where your “home airport” is and where you plan to stay, it might be a cheaper option to fly into Marco Polo and not into Treviso. Yes, I am serious about this ! Lufthansa seems to have decided to offer alternatives to Ryanair flights, and if you are flexible with days (what I was), you can get roundtrip tickets including taxes for 88 Euro from major German airports (mine was Frankfurt). As I planned to stay in Venezia anyhow (and not in Mestre or anywhere on the mainland), my costs to get there from my flat at home were 6 Euro (bus to Frankfurt airport) + 44 Euro (= half of the plane ticket) + 6 Euro (Alilaguna) = 56 Euro including taxes and all. Consider this, if you think about how much finally a Ryanair ticket (or any other cheap airline one) will be, adding the transport costs to the respective Ryanair airport and the costs of getting from Treviso airport (40 kms north of Marco Polo) into Venezia.
Maybe by now, also other major airlines follow Lufthansa's calculations.
Plus – leaving from Marco Polo airport, which is located directly at the northern part of the lagoon (if you look closely, you can see the airport in photo 3), will give you the benefit of a first class view of the lagoon. I even thought that our captain must have done this lap of honour just for us passengers ! There was no reason why we could not have head north after take off, but he flew a circle over the lagoon so give us these fantastic views. It was quite late, so the photos did not turn out better. Make sure, you book a seat in the right part of the plane (seats D-F).

So I did fly with SN Brussels airlines from Brussels to Venice (flight time 1h30).
I was lucky to have a window seat, especially when we were flying over the Alps.
And also there were almost no clouds, so we had a very good view on the snowy mountains.
What a great view (see my pictures).

About 11 months ahaed I booked this flight. I booked this flight directly via the website of SN Brussels.
There were several flights a day. As I booked very early I had still all the possibilities to choose.
Si i booked the first flight of the day on my day of departure, and the last flight on the day of return. like this i had the maximum of time during my stay in Venice.
Flight scedule :
SN3201 SN Brussels Airlines
DEPARTING Brussels on 15 Feb 2007 at 09:40
ARRIVING Venice on 15 Feb 2007 at 11:25
SN3204 SN Brussels Airlines
DEPARTING Venice on 19 Feb 2007 at 17:00
ARRIVING Brussels on 19 Feb 2007 at 18:50
So that was a five day stay in venice.
The price for this flight was 247 euro - and was via an E-ticket.
Of course there are possibilities to fly cheaper, like with Ryan Air from Charleroi Airport. But I did choose for certainty. My flight was in Februari, and that is a period with fog possibilites, and from the moment there is fog, there are no planes leaving from Charleroi, and that was a risk that I did not wanted. Also SN is flying to the nearby Marco polo airport, as Ryan Air is flying further away to the airport of Treviso.

Venice has two airports, Marco Polo and Treviso. I booked a flight from London on RyanAir from London Stansted into Treviso, 19 miles (30 km) from Venice and further away than Marco Polo.
I believe there is a ATVO Eurobus that coincides with Ryanair arrivals and departures and the fare is much cheaper than a taxi, 5E one-way or 9E return.
This information is from another website, will update when I return:
"Purchase your ticket at the ATVO counter in the airport and stamp it in the ticket-validation machine on the bus. If you need a ticket from Venice to Treviso Airport, go to the ATVO ticket office in the Piazzale Roma.
You'll need to allow 1 hour 10 minutes for the bus trip, including two brief stops in Venice-Mestre, a suburb on the mainland where you can catch express trains to cities throughout Italy. After pausing in Mestre, the bus crosses the causeway to Venice, which is several kilometers offshore in the Venice Lagoon. The end of the line is the Piazzale Roma, where you can walk or catch a vaporetto (water bus) to your hotel."

Flights from London Stansted to 'Venice' on Ryanair land 20 miles away at a tin shed in Treviso. No joke, it's a shack with a baggage carousel. The only other main carrier flying in here at the time was Romania's national carrier.
Coaches await outside to shuttle you to Mestre (for the mainland train station) and Venice itself, 45 minutes away. A single journey at the time cost 4.30 euro, no doubt this has gone up but the Ryanair website will have a link to up to date fares and schedules.
The route is along minor roads through non-stop suburbia, yet the landscape is immediately Italian. Poplar trees line up in front of loggias, shops have shuttered windows and while we did spot a McDonalds we also saw an enticing place called Lady Bingo.
The road to Venice runs along a railway track and presents an uninspiring view of Venice's worst side. Its backside, even. Cranes stalk a container port. Industrial chimneys bristle amongst rail sidings and tin warehouses. And Mestre? Hideous.
You'll be conveniently dropped off in Venice at the Piazzele Roma, the messy car park at the end of the land bridge to the mainland, where you can hop directly onto a vaporetto down the Grand Canal. Even here at the bus stop and multi-storey car park a canal with turquoise water laps the asphalt.
