Does the unthinkable and makes an Easy Jet flight into Marco Polo feel like Emirates into Heathrow.
Some people describe this airport as a shed in a field. Unfair to the vast majority of sheds. And fields.
Before you even arrive in Treviso you'll be disappointed that your £4 Ryanair flight quickly turned into a £100 credit card extravaganza after you added on such extravagant luxuries as taking a bag on board.
Back to the airport, and for 'baggage reclaim / passport control' read 'scout hut with 10 checkout conveyor belts'. Dont even think about using the cambio (change) kiosk - we were quoted 15% commission to change 100 euros.
Ryanair must feel guilty about hoodwinking you over the ticket cos they provide a bus to take you from Treviso to Venice. To be fair this is organised pretty smoothly and they have produced little leaflets with timetables for the return bus trip so you don’t miss it (which really would leave you up the canal without a cornetto as I didn’t see many taxis). Pleasant enough journey through semi-rural Italy, but adds another wasted hour to your already short ‘short break away’.
Bus stops at the train station in Mestre first, before dumping you in the main bus terminal in Venice, Piazzale Roma. From here you can easily catch a direct vaporetto to most major stops in Venice and the islands beyond. Cash only, no credit cards for the expensive 25 euro 3 day vaporetta passes.
The Treviso experience was even more magical for the return flight. The airport crumbles under the weight of more than 3 flights in a one hour period and this, coupled with some Italians inability to join a queue at the back, means you'll be in for a long wait for check in / security / flights etc
Unless the budget is tighter than a camel's a*se in a sandstorm, fly Easy Jet into Marco Polo every time. Better airport, view of Venice on landing / take off, and a water bus direct to multi stops in Venice.

Venice Marco Polo airport is located at Tessera, some 8km north of Venice on the edge of the lagoon. Its the main airport for scheduled flights and also the budget airline Go (now part of Easyjet). NEW from summer 2005 Jet 2 (another budget airline) will fly from Manchester as well as Leeds Bradford to Venice Marco Polo. From here its a 20 min coach jouney (co-incides with flights) - Venice Express is a new bus service from Venice airport to Piazzale Roma. It is a direct, non-stop coach style bus that runs every 20 minutes. Look for a large blue bus outside the Arrivals area, under the Venice Express sign and digital clock.
Alternatively take a water bus for the scenic way to arrive in Venice proper (airport ferries approx 10 euro and private water taxis horrendously expensive comparitively - check before you board).
The airport website gives lots of useful info regarding flight arrivals and departures etc..

If you take a budget flight to Venice.. Chances are you will land up in Treviso airport.. which is a serious no-frill airport!
From there you take a shuttle bus to venice island, it drops passengers off at the bus terminal which is opposite the train station (Piazzale Roma).

The nicest airport to arrive at Venice. The best value way to get to the main island is the Alilaguna (see my transport tip).
The first time, on my return, I couldn't find Departures for love nor money! After 10 minutes of wandering around aimlessly I located Departures on the upper level (accessed either via the escalator in the main entrance or the lifts, either side of the man entrance just inside).
There is a quick self check-in kiosk for Lufthansa (I think it was). I didn't see any others but to be honest I only noticed this one because we were early for check in and so sat on the floor next to it!
As you fly in, the views on a clear day are spectacular; you fly over the Dolomites, the Adriatic, and the Venetian Lagoon and you also get your first view of the city itself, with the Campanile and the Grand Canal! The Captain of our BMIbaby flight pointed out the Matterhorn and Lake Geneva during our flight. We were flying over the mountains for ages and it was a beautifully clear day.
You can still see the Campanile on a clear day while you sit and wait to board your plane.

We travelled to Venice via Treviso Airport, which is approximately an hour from Venice by bus.
There is a great bus transfer system. Tickets are 8 euros return, and you are taken close to the Grand Canal, where you can catch your waterbus. You are given a timetable with your tickets which tells you exactly which bus you must catch back - every flight has its own bus time so there is no risk of you getting it wrong!
There is only one ticket kiosk at Treviso Airport selling bus tickets, so if you are travelling with somebody, it is worth one of you going ahead to buy the bus tickets while the other one waits for the luggage to arrive. Otherwise you will queue for your bus tickets for a long time!

I arrived to Venice by plane. Marco Polo is a little airport well communicated with the city. Just get out the airport and you will find the bus stop. Ask if it goes to the central bus stop and if it does get in. You can also get a ship but it takes long time.

If you're flying from the UK and live near Gatwick, try booking an Easyjet flight to Milan - Linate airport - instead. From the airport you can take the STAM bus to Central Station 3 euros, and from the central station the trains depart every hour (5min past the hour) to Venice. It's a 3 hour journey and a return ticket costs 19 euros...
Make your calculations and see how much you could save compared to departing direct from Stanstead to Venice... The flight is more expensive and then there is the time and cost of travelling to stanstead...

How to reach Venice ?
The easiest way is by train; you arrive at the north side Canareggio which is a lively, authentic and nice part of Venice (a lot of tourist altough), with more or less cheap hotels. When you arrive by plane, you can take a bus (about 5-8 euro) or a taxi (about 25-30). You arrive at a big parking place and from here you have to walk (alo over over bridges) or take a boat. So if you have the chance...the best way is to bring luggage and family to the Mestre train station (5 km north) look for a safe and cheap parkingplace in Mestre and take a train, which departs every 10-15 minutes...
