For most North Americans, flying to Italy means booking a ticket to Milan or Rome.
But Venice's Marco Polo International Airport (VCE) at Tessera, on the mainland just north of Venice, is a more convenient gateway for many travelers. We took a flight from Venice to London and greatly enjoyed it. The aerial view of Venice was breathtaking.
You'll see the beautiful city, with instantly recognizable landmarks like the Grand Canal and the Campanile San Marco. You'll see the Venetian Lagoon, the Dolomites and of course the Adriatic Sea.
It is a 20-minute road trip from the city's Piazzale Roma. Two different bus routes are available, and both are inexpensive. Bus ATVO (blue bus) is a direct connection from the airport to Piazzale Roma that takes about 20 minutes; buses leave every half an hour. The ticket costs €4 and includes luggage.
Bus ACTV No. 5 (orange bus) is a public transport bus and therefore makes several stops before reaching Piazzale Roma (it takes approximately 45min). The bus runs frequently between 4:05 a.m. and 12:10 a.m. The ticket is quite cheap - it costs around €1, but does not include luggage transport. You have to purchase an extra ticket for each suitcase you're carrying on the bus (the same price as for passengers). If you aren't carrying a lot of luggage and aren't traveling at rush hour, this public bus is a good way to reach the city.
You can also ride the boat from the airport to the Piazza San Marco for 10 € - and you'll get a sightseer's view of the Venetian lagoon during the 40-minute ride.

The Marco Polo Airport is located 12 km over land and 10 km over water from Venice and is well connected to the city by public transportation lines (water and land) and to the rail station in Mestre.
The slip road opened in 1991 connects the Marco Polo airport directly to the roadway network. The airport serves the entire tri-region of Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trentino Alto Adige. Distances in kilometres:
25 Km from Treviso
32 Km from Padua
45 Km from Jesolo
65 Km from Vicenza

MARCO POLO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT:
Venice's Marco Polo International Airport is situated approximately 25 minutes away from the city. The airport is served by buses, trains and cabs.... and car rental companies.
If you're heading towards the direction of Piazza San Marco (like us), I'd highly recommend that you take the boat for approx. US$10.00. What's more, you'll get to enjoy a panoramic view of the Venetian lagoon during your 40-minute ride.
The vaporetto, or water bus is the most practical way to get around Venice when you don't feel like walking. It's more economical to take these water taxis when you have a group of 5 or more people.... or have extra money to burn.
P.S. Just remember, when boarding the vaporetto at a stop that doesn't have a ticket booth, immediately request the vaporetto driver for a biglietto (ticket). Otherwise, you'll be subject to a fine.
Not kidding.

Marco Polo Airport -- Don't judge Venice by the arrivals area of the airport. It looks like a hangar with a couple of luggage turnstiles. (This is probably an outdated comment consindering there is a new airport.)

We flew Ryanair from Brussels South (Charleroi) to Venice Treviso.
Very convenient and cheap!
Ryanair
In Treviso a special shuttle (Eurobus service) takes you to either Venice Island (Pizzale Roma) or to Mestre. On the day of your return you take the shuttle back to the airport.
Price for a return ticket is 8 euro (ticket is valid 1 week). Buy your ticket at the change office in the airport. The service is in connection with the arrivals and departures of Ryanair flights.

Located just 12km (seven miles) from Venice, Marco Polo airport is the main hub for European and national flights to the Veneto region. It is easily accessible by land or water and when occasionally blighted by fog, planes can land at nearby airports in Treviso or Verona. Despite having only one terminal, Marco Polo is the third busiest airport in Europe and handled 4.4 million passengers in 2000. A new terminal, which will cater for 6.5 million passengers a year, is being constructed.
Approximate flight times to Venice: From London is 2 hours 10 minutes; from New York is 9 hours 20 minutes; from Los Angeles is 13 hours 20 minutes; from Toronto is 10 hours 30 minutes and from Sydney is 20 hours 45 minutes.

Ryanair, the budget airline giant based at London Stansted Airport, provides cheap flight from London to Venice.
My return tickets cost me about 80 GBP, but it could be cheaper! There was a promotion, only several days after my purchase, that provided 40 GBP return tickets to Venice. I missed that chance. :-(
