Day trip to the Tremiti Islands
The tremiti Islands are about 135Km from the foggia area and it consists of San Domino, San Nicola, Caprara. If you are in the viesta area, definitely it is worth the trip.
You can buy the ticket at the Marina and they have boat tickets that will take you out to the island around 9 a.m. and take you back to Viesta around 5:30 p.m.
The three island is amazing beautiful and full of natural wonder. The water condition is pristine. We were swimming with snoggle and can see all the corals and fishes from afar. There is also diving school on the island that you can rent the diving equipment.
The island San Domino has been inhabited since the 2nd millennium B.C. and was subsequently visited by the Greeks and Romans. In the year 1000 it was chosen as a hermitage by the Benedictine monks who later left the island and settled in San Nicola. It is also the island where most of the hotels are.
The island San Nicola has the splendid and magnificent Abbey of Santa Maria which was built around 11th century. It take more than half day to walk through the whole Abbey and the castle. You can also rent a boat to tour around the islands. Some people will then park their boat to some pretty private area for sunbathing.
It was quite magical to swim at the beach in the island san domino overlooking the castle and the Abbey at the other island.
Half-day trip to the Foresta Umbra
The Gargano promontory is home to a natural land and marine reserve.
Foresta Umbra (Shady Forest) is in the middle of the promontory, and is a nice shady shelter from the summer heat. Unfortunately I had no time to visit it, so I cannot provide more precise information, but I would plan a visit in case I come back to the area.
My husband did a quick your of the forest and he was enthousiastic.

Take a boat trip to "Le Grotte"
The Gargano promontory rock has been heavily shaped by the wind and the sea water, giving birth to many caves visible only from the sea. There are different boat companies offering half-day boat trips to the caves (Le Grotte), and stopping on unspoilt beaches for a bath. The price is 15€ per person.
I particularly enjoyed this trip, caves are really impressive because of their size and beauty, and there is no other way to see them.
You can look for boat companies at the port, or close to the Pizzo Munno beach where they offer a free shuttle service to the port.
We have also seen some people with canoes visiting the caves close to the city.

All Vieste beaches deserve a visit: just drive along the seafront and stop whenever you like! Some beaches are free, other are "paying" beaches (usually equipped with bars, beach umbrellas and sunbeds) that could be quite expensive in high season. In June, we paid 3€ per person/day for a beach umbrella and 2 sunbeds.
All beaches are sandy and the sea level is low, even at high tide: they are perfect for children!
Be careful in high season because there are only a few parking ares close to the beaches, and you may risk not to find a place to your car!

Visit old Vieste
Vieste city centre is divided into the new city and the old one. Old Vieste is a typical Mediterranean suburb with small pedestrian strees, tiny restaurants and shops and old ladies dressed in black sitting outside the door.
I particularly suggest a visit in the evening since the small streets become even more beautiful.
Pay attention at restaurants! They are much more expensive in Old Vieste!

...every street has it's own story...
It's really nice to walk through those narrow streets....after that you'll really like some nice supper in one of the many local restaurants
