Pickpockets on metro

by lordvader

All of the warnings about crime in Rome are true. I have been to many of the major cities in western Europe and Rome is the only place that I ever had problems. We had just arrived in country and boarded an A line metro at Termini. The train car was packed solid and we were hauling all our luggage. I had a fanny pack on w my passport and a small wallet w credit card and an ID card. As the train started moving, I felt a minor sensation on my waist. I was half asleep and not familiar w the movement of the train. It went on a bit longer, and I became suspicious. I looked at my fanny pack, which was partially concealed by a light jacket I was wearing. My pack was wide open, which I never do. So I look at the young woman standing next to me and say "What the f### are you doing?" She gave me a little miss innocent look like she hadn't done anything. The train doors were opening at the same...

Watch your feet

by etfromnc

Although the world seems to be getting way too informal, I must confess that one incident which I encountered on my way from Venice to Monaco last summer may be a bit over the top and worthy of a note to warn other VTers. A couple with whom I shared a compartment for one segment of the journey related that the female of the pair had been fined 50 euros for putting her feet on the seat across from her by the Italian transit police.

Eating out in northern Italy

by bergstenarn

I and my family (two adults and two children) spent 15 days traveling around by train in northern italy in July 2009. We visited Milan, Rapallo, Portofino, Santa Margherita, Pisa, Florence, Rome, Assisi, Venice and Como. Everyday we ate out and most of the time the food served turned out to be far below our expectation. For example:* tasteless* microwave oven made pizza* grilled chicken which was red inside* carbonated red wine* awfull vegitarian plate with grilled vegitables* small portions* rude/nonchalant waitersNote that most of the food you cook yourself at home probably taste better than what you get when eating out in northern Italy. We were surprised by this since the Italian kitchen is well known worldwide. Who hasn't heard about pizza, pasta, parma ham and parmesan cheese? For the whole family we mostly paid between 40 and 65 euro for a single plate meal including beverage...

Fake train station employees

by ReetSLP

Watch out for men wearing clothing similar to those of train station employees. Be smart and never hand over anything to anyone. On our first trip through Naples, a man came up and asked if we needed directions to the circumvesuviana and proceeded to tell us where it was. He then told us to give him our bags and he would take them to be loaded on the train. Obviously, we didn't hand over our bags, but I think it would be helpful to know that there is no loading of luggage on the circumvesuviana. You keep your stuff with you. On the way back through Naples, a man in similar clothing came up while we were looking at our ticket and grabbed the ticket out of my friend's hand and said "Here! I will help you!" He made a beeline to the ticket validator and validated our ticket for us. I demanded the ticket back and he ignored me and took off toward the back of the train. We chased him down...

Beware of pickpockets!

by hopang

Beware of pickpockets especially in large cities like Rome, Verona, Florence, Siena and Pisa. Be extra careful when in areas where there are large crowd especially at squares, markets, restaurants and major and popular tourist attractions. Do not carry your ricksakes or travelling bags behind your back. Just carry them in front of you so that you are aware of what is going on in front of you. Be aware that the thieves may work in pair or group!

Rome Subway Pickpockets

by kitty_jo

All the major metropolitan areas are prone to pickpockets. Your best bet is to be alert and aware of your surroundings. The thieves would rather target the obvious tourist with head buried in map than the guy who tries to blend in and is clearly alert to what's going on.

Eating/Drinking in Public

by goodfish

New laws are popping up around Italy - notably in Venice, Rome and Florence - about eating and drinking in public places. Besides the usual problem of sloppy people leaving trash all over, it appears that Italians feel a bit differently about the indiscriminate noshing that's become common in the US. While they do indeed have fast food, it is often eaten where it was purchased or discreetly in a quiet corner of a street or park. I've read various on-line comments from Italians who are puzzled and repelled by tourists vigorously chewing away anywhere and everywhere in public and especially on, or near, their national treasures. Where most man-made treasures in the US are safely behind glass, not so in Italy. It's sometimes hard for tourists to realize that the fountain they're about to spill gelato all over is 2000 years old! That said, the laws can be a bit ambiguous and judging from the...

THE MOST DANGEROUS ESCALATOR IN EUROPE

by DAO

Talk about overkill. I saw this very large and heavy sign in a department store near an escalator in Rome. It was leaning to the side and could have fallen over and killed someone! I mean, look at the horrendous issues that seem to plague this poor escalator. It even has a few ideas I have never even seen tried before. I mean, this must be a stunt escalator or something. ROME ESCALATORS – BEWARE!

Italy - anti-theft bags, etc., to thwart thieves

by nanajanet

Italy is a good place to have your purse, wallet, etc., stolen. To be safe, I have found bags, in all sizes (backpacks, waist pouches, small and large purses and other items) called Pacsafe. They are lined with a steel mesh and the straps have a steel cable running through them. There is more information to find directly at their website at http://www.pacsafe.com/www/index.php. I suggest you go there and look. I have found them for less on eBay, and other online shops, but even if you pay full price, they are well worth it. They have other anti-theft devices. I cannot stress it enough that they are well worth the cost.

using a table not included in price

by delcity

the prices you see at the sandwich shops and other small places about the size of a subways sandwich shop are often the take out prices .if you decide to sit at a table to consume your food purchase there often will be a table charge as well.the table charge may be more than the food.
