Theft

by domino2012

That's right... we were warned about pick pocketing. When in Venice, keep your cameras in front of you, for the ladies, if you can avoid a purse, it's best... Keep your money in the front pocket. This is especially true during the "high" season when streets are packed with people (you'll see this for yourself)... I'm sure it's about the same in almost any city in the world, but hey, when we were there, we were told by several people to be careful so better safe than sorry.

THE ITALIAN MALE --- WARNING ---- AIUTO!!!!

by iris2002

An Italian man flirts like other men breathe -- regularly and naturally. From the days of Casanova, Italians have had a reputation for charming women the world over and they never rely on looks alone. "They're sultry, suave and know how to flirt. American guys don't flirt, they tend to go the opposite route, and turn rudeness into some sort of come-on scheme," -- "Also, Italians are funny and love life." And the boys are smart to boot. According to the Italian website Zoomata, in a recent magazine survey of more than 1,000 Italian men, 68 percent reported carrying a book to the beach to encourage conversation with women. About 80 percent of those men toted The Bible or Dante's Divine Comedy -- hardly lightweight reading material. No doubt that their pick-up lines are more poetic! The lesson for other men reading this is that to be truly successful with women, you have to use all of your...

not exactly warning

by Gili_S

Well, not exactly warning, but to be prepared, coming to Italy from Finland I cannot expect that things always will be functioning here, I mean, where to validate your train ticket, public toilet and even the airport flight information is not always available. Well, now I know the reason the Pope kisses the ground each time his flights arrived to a new destination. ;-)

Don't touch the produce!

by Callavetta

This is something that most of my American friends who have traveled to Italy have learned the hard way! We are so accustomed to strolling through the market, pinching the melons, squeezing the avocadoes, sniffing the pineapples. When in a small produce market in Italy, DO NOT TOUCH! Do not attempt to pick up your own piece of fruit, to sample the cherries, to help yourself. The proper protocol is to get the attention of the vendor and point to the items you want. They will bag the good for you, take your money and the deal is done. I guarantee that any attempt to help yourself will reap you a good tongue lashing!

be careful

by chez1026

dont walk down dark dingy streets on your own females!!!! the italians can be a bit full on and intimidating, a guy on a moped actually mounted the pavement infront of me and refused to let me past unless i gave him a smooch!!!!!! you tend to hear bella bella quite a lot!!!!!1

Just take it easy...

by shirez

well, i do love italians, but there is one fact: they are not well known uhm, because of their punctuality..or at least: be prepared that trains are not on time, so if you have a connection, you might be losing it.from Venezia to Florence our train was 30 min late and we caught our train to Pisa (which departs every hour, and it was 11pm already) in the last minute!from Pisa to Roma the train was about 40 min late, and i thanked God that i counted with it when i chose my train to catch my flight from Ciampino!PS. pls note that in case of public holidays (or a few days before) there are seats no available on trains! so pls book in advance, othervise you will be in trouble (in my case: i missed my plane in Rome, as couldnt get out of Firenze) (actually i was really happy to get stucked in Italy for one more day)

Naples is too Dangerous to Visit

by no1birdlady

When we took our Cosmos Tour to Italy, we did not visit Naples. We were told that it was too dangerous. There are pickpockets and criminals who will mug you. When a tour group will not visit a city, it must be pretty bad.

Be Aware of "Friction Between North & South

by deecat

Because three northern regions [out of the twenty that make up Italy] generate 40 percent of Italy's wealth, there exists some bad feelings between this wealthy region and the poor regions in the south. The region around the Po Valley produces almost all of the nation's agricultural produce as well as its industrial products. There's an organization called the Northern League that has been powerful since the 1990s. It wants the 13 regions that make up the northern part of Italy to separate from the south and form a new nation! They refer to this new nation as Padania. This league thinks that if the north and south separate, the north's taxes would be considerably lower, not having to support the south. It's sad, but they call Rome "Roma ladrona", which means "Robber Rome." I personally do not know whether this group is serious or whether they just wish to draw attention to their high...

Tourists Create Problems in Italy

by deecat

As a traveler, tourist, visitor [whatever you call yourself], we all have a big obligation when in Italy. Make sure that you do not become part of the problem.Because Italy is an important destination for tourists, both within & beyond Europe, it attracts more than two million visitors a year. Tourism is the main source of income for cities such as Venice, Rome, Florence, & Milan. But huge numbers of tourist have created many problems for these cities. People throw chewing gum down & trod it into the marble floors. Crowds push to get near the many statues in the museums & in the streets, touching them & climbing on them. They say that the acid in human sweat eats away at the marble. The famous Uffizi Museum used to have 11,000 visitors a day, but today it is limited to 5,000. This has helped somewhat. The biggest problem that tourism presents is the problems it causes to the environment...

LONELY PLANET TRAP.

by Laerke

I have been dissapointed (for the first time) with Lonely Planet. I am talking about the one on Italy. The worst guiding ever!Worst was no or very little details on where to sleep, especially on budget places. Secondly prices werent updated eventhough it was the newest eddititon. Thirdly little or nothing was said about too many areas. Simply too many black holes.Overall my Michelin Roadmap was more helpful. My advice: if you are expecting a food experience over average, get a foodguide separatey. Buy guides for the regions specifically for the places you want to visit - if not possible look up Footprint books or any other but Lonely Planet (I dont know about their regional guides). Good luck!
