Beautiful St Aubins Beach

by jo104

Have you ever experienced walking on the beach whilst being pelted by hail stones - I have now. This beach lies on Jerseys south coast and is a safe swimming beach, it is both a sun trap & well sheltered from the wind. It is suited to watersports such as windsurfing, water skiing etc. There are lots of summer beach kiosks open.

Black Butter

by jo104

Jersey has many apple orchards and as well as producing their own cider are very proud of their black butter (La Niere Buerre). This is made from cider apples boiled for many hours even days then it is reduced by half and sugar, lemon, liquorice & spices are added. It is stirred with a wooden paddle until it reaches a thick consistency.Christel first tasted black butter ice-cream which the shop keeper described as a hot cross bun taste. This butter can not only be smeared on toast, scones etc but also can be used to glaze hams and the like. You will find that the price of black butter is the same in most shops and even the airport.

Public toilets - when you need to go

by jo104

After our walk we were pleased to find nice clean public toilets in Corbiere. After chatting to some of the guests at our hotel they remarked also on how clean the public toilets were around the beachfront areas and they had seen someone cleaning them even though it was pelting down with rain outside. The public toilets appear to be free in most places as well but then I can only go on my visit to the one near the lighthouse and the liberation station.

History & Beauty

by Mortyone

Beatiful scenery. Friendly people, Good climate.Plenty of historic castles and sites to visit. The war tunnels (German underground hospital) is a place not to be missed if you want to understand how the people of Jersey survived during the years of German occupation (1940/1945)

Medical

by Jasen71

The UK National Health Service does not extend to Jersey but there is a reciprocal Health Convention between the UK Dept of Health and the States of Jersey for immediate necessary medical services for visitors. Visitors from overseas can obtain medical assistance at the Morning Medical Clinic in Newgate Street, St. Helier. To make an appointment, telephone 01534 616833 between 8:30am and 4:30pm and you will be connected to a GP Surgery who will give you an appointment and the location of the Surgery for that day. This is an all day surgery-based service on weekdays. Services are free to UK residents and to residents of countries with a reciprocal agreement - Alderney, Australia, Austria, Barbados, France, Guernsey, Iceland, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the Isle of Man. For persons from non-reciprocal countries, there will be a fee, which will be advised by the Surgery...

Road Laws! 'Filter in turn'

by Jasen71

Filter in turn!? If the intersection is marked by a filter in turn sign, drivers must take turns when negotiating the junction. In other words you filter in turn!? Watching people trying to filter in turn.

Follow the tide...

by Bushman23

When the South beach tide goes out on Jersey, it goes out a LOOONG way. take a walk out at low tide, then look back and you wont actually realise just how far you've gone away from the island. If you want a bit of peace and quiet from the bustle of St Helier, etc., then this is the perfect solution!

Lilly - Jersey's Own Beauty Queen

by Tea4Two

Lillie was born in 1853 in Jersey. She was the only daughter of the Rector of St Saviour and the Dean of Jersey, the Very Reverend William Corbet Le Breton. She was baptised Emilie Charlotte Le Breton, but was always known amongst her friends as Lillie. Lillie met John Millais through London’s Society and he asked if she would sit for him, as he wanted to be the first painter to portray his countrywoman. Millais’ “A Jersey Lillie” immediately enhanced the reputation of her beauty, especially when it was hung in The Royal Academy and nominated in 1879 as picture of the year.Lillie was the mistress of the Prince of Wales for several years as well as being a friend right up until his death in 1910.After Lillie’s affair with Prince Edward was over, she met another Royal Prince - Prince Louis of Battenberg, to whom she had an illegitimate daughter. In 1899 Lillie married once again, this time...

Best Looking Cows in the World!

by Tea4Two

The Jersey cow is numerically the second largest breed of dairy cattle in the world. She is renowned worldwide and revered in Jersey for her beauty, purity and rich, golden, high quality milk.If you have the chance look at their huge brown eyes and their incredibly long eye lashes. Having been raised on a farm in Jersey I adore the Jersey Cow. They are not only beautiful but intelligent. My grandfather had a name for every single one of his cows and - unbelievably - the cow would come to him when called. Bizarre but true!

Quirky Facts

by Tea4Two

The ‘Queen of Spain’ visits Jersey every year. Along with swallowtails and an abundance of other butterflies that are drawn to the island by a staggering floral tapestry. The Jersey Battle of Flowers is now over 100 years old ..… and was first staged in 1902 to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII.Why does Jersey have moles and Guernsey does not?Because Guernsey separated from France before Jersey did and before moles had time to inhabit it!!
