La Rocque

by steventilly

La Rocque is one of our favourite spots. The beach is great and there is a breakwater-cum-pier separating the beach in this picture from a small area where boats moor up - it's hard to call it a harbour! The boats are all grounded when the tide goes out. I like to swim in the "harbour" when the tide is coming in.When the tide is out (and it goes a long way out), there is a Martello Tower right down the beach and a bit to the left. Once some people on horseback were stranded here (along with their horses) by the rising tide and had to wait for the next low tide. I've often wanted to get to this tower but the memory of this tale prevents me from doing so!The landscape when the tide is out resembles the moon, with rocks, craters and potholes everywhere. It's quite fascinating.

Havre De Fer (I)

"Iron Harbour" - not quite sure why it gets this name, I guess from some old harbour in the past.Different from many of the other bays around Jersey, the Havre De Fer is a pebble beach. It's not visited by many people, maybe because of this, but it's a pleasant spot and great for picnics. Bees can sometimes be a problem on this "beach".

Gorey (III)

by steventilly

Here is a street of cottages in Gorey village. The village has some tea rooms, shops and post office and is the home of "The Jersey Pottery", where you can see some excellent work first hand. Don't miss "The Secret Garden" tea rooms opposite the seafront car park, and if you want accomodation "The Old Court House Hotel" is excellent, though far from cheap. We stayed at a B&B in Gorey once, but it's now gone, along with some other B&Bs and hotels that we have stayed at. Tourism is on the decline in Jersey now.

Here's a closer look at the castle and the row of shops, hotels and restaurants that huddle along the harbour at Gorey. Our favourite Chinese Restaurant is in this row, and there is a nice pub on the hill behind the castle.

Gorey is a village with two parts to it. There's the village proper and then there's Gorey Pier, it's about a 15 minute walk between them. The main thing you notice about Gorey is Mount Orgueil Castle. It towers above the harbour and can be seen from miles around. And just look at that glorious, empty beach!

Corbiere (III)

by steventilly

The catermeran "St Malo" inexplicably hit the rocks here, despite the best efforts of the lighthouse! Everyone on board was rescued safely thanks to a human chain which was formed to get the people ashore. This monument was erected to commemerate the near disaster.

The lighthouse is in a remote and sometimes bleak spot. You can get to the lighthouse at low tide, but be careful not to get cut off. You cannot actually enter the lighthouse, but it makes a good spot for a picnic and it's great at sunset. Watch for one of the ferries (especially the catermerans) as they whizz past.

The Corbiere lighthouse stands on a corner of the island, roughly between the bays of St Brelade and St Ouen. You can get to it by walking the old railway route from St Aubin, via St Brelade and on to Corbiere, or you could just drive. The walk is nice though, taking in some country lanes and passing through St Brelades (Red Houses) on the way.

Road Laws 'Traffic Lights'

by Jasen71

Traffic lights! The sequence of traffic lights differs from that of the UK and goes from red to green with no amber in between.

The water is SO blue here, as with much of Jersey. The island is great for sunbathing and a picnic lunch.
