WALKING ON JERSEY.....

There is no better way to learn to know JERSEY that to walk, walk, walk....There are marked routes, you can walk on the normal roads and country lanes, but there are also nice tours, longer or shorter, over coastal paths and narrow walkways, over the beach or over the rocks, along sloping meadows.I would advise you to buy THE ORDONANCE MAP in which all foot paths can be found. The AA/Ordonance Survey Leisure Guide of the CHANNEL ISLANDS contains 7 very interesting walks.I love Mary Brydon-Philips' booklet called 'TRACKS AND TALES" which gives more detailed info in some 20 different coastal walks.But you can also (with a little group) go for guided walks, which is always nice...But...call for reservations: zie below.... The Island has three 18 hole courses and three nine hole courses with some of the most stunning views.We stayed near Royal Jersey Golf Club which is the oldest established golf club in Jersey and visitors are welcome between 10-12 in the morning and 12-2pm in the afternoon Mon - Fri and after 2.30pm on the weekends.Check out www.jersey.com for more details of other courses

SurfingSt Ouen's Bay on Jersey's west coast is an all-year-round mecca for surfers surfing has been popular here since 1923 Jersey founded what was possibly the first surf club in Europe - the Island Surf Club . Other good breakers can also be found at Greve de Lecq, Plemont and St Brelade's Bay. The Surfshak at the Watersplash, St Ouen, tel 484005, offers surfboard and wetsuit hire. Lots of golf courses on the island,reasonably priced,considering the myth surrounding the game,'expensive,only for the well off'. Bring your clubs and your windproof clothing,it can get a bit blustery,well that was my excuse for some dodgy shots !!!

Swimming

If you fancy a dip away from the sea and your hotel doesn’t have a pool, there are some alternatives. There are two freshwater pools at Fort Regent, one national size and the other shallow for children and beginners. Les Quennevais Sports Centre also has two freshwater pools.Or for a change try one of the open air seawater pools, with all the pleasures associated with lounging on the beach and the relative safety of an enclosed pool. There is a pool located at West Park close to the causeway leading to Elizabeth Castle, and another at Havre des Pas, which has recently undergone complete renovation.

For an Island measuring nine miles by five Jersey offers visiting golfers a rich selection of courses.The two 18-hole championship courses, La Moye and the Royal Jersey Golf Club, require proof of handicap but keen golfers who do not belong to a club are not left out, they can play at four other venues - Jersey Recreation Grounds, Les Mielles Golf and Country Club, Les Ormes Golf and Leisure Club and Wheatlands Golf Club.Jersey has an impressive golf pedigree. Ted Ray and Harry Vardon, who won the British Open six times, were born and learned their golf in the Island. Jersey has also produced other well known players like Aubrey and Percy Boomer. Ian Woosnam is also resident in the island. Equipment can be hired for a fee - depending on which course you play at.
