Railway Walk

by Jasen71

The old railway track - now used as a pedestrian walkway, cycle track and route for Le Petit Train. It's possible to walk all along the bay from St. Helier to St. Aubins and then onto the lighthouse a Corbiere. All along the way you can occasionally spot remnants of the old railway platforms which some are now well needed cafes..

Town and Port of St Aubin

by Jasen71

To the western end of the bay is the little town and port of St. Aubins. This lovely little town and was once Jersey's main port. It's well worth having a walk around the area. The harbour here once brought great wealth into the island and fine old merchant houses can still be seen in the area. St. Aubins Fort (above right) was built in the 1540s to protect the ships that anchored in the area, and is accessible on foot only at low tide. The Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club is situated at this end of the bay and the Fort forms the focal point of junior sailing lessons during the summer months.

Glencoe Auctions

by Jasen71

Located in a field and an old cattle shed is the famous HW Maillards Glencoe Auction held every Wednesday afternoon from 2pm till 5.30pm. It's a howl with the Jersey local types fighting it out for the items offered for auction.. they sell everything from Vehicles (horse drawn or motor driven), Boats, Building and Gardening Equipment, Architectural Items, Household Furniture and Effects including Antiques.. It's the only auction in the UK that does not charge the buyer a premium!

Sea Fishing

by Jasen71

Sea Fishing is a must in Jersey... The island is surrounded by the sea...well of course it is when its an island!! Jersey holds some of the UKs' top fish records.. Big Sea Bass are a common catch... You can fish from the beach, harbours, piers and coasts. There are two chartered fishing boats that offer sea fishing trips..No licence is needed to fish the sea.. Nothing better than some ice-cold beers and a fishing rod to spend a day...

Corbiere Lighthouse

by Jasen71

In the Parish of St Brelade is the Corbiere Lighthouse. It was built in 1873 Corbiere lighthouse was the first concrete built lighthouse in the British Isles and is positioned on the south west corner of the Island. Many ships had come to grief on the rocks before the lighthouse was built, and the local gave no quarter to the survivors, as they where interested in the cargos of the wrecked ships... Corbiere is a great place to walk around, and in the summer months a car boot sale is held nearby on a saturday 8am till 2pm..

The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust

by Jasen71

The Zoo was set up by the late renowned conservationist and author Gerald Durrell in 1959 and today is still home to hundreds of endangered species. Everything from vivid pink flamingoes to tiny fruit bats and large lowland gorillas ( a famous incident happen many years ago when a young lad fell into the gorilla enclosure and the alpha male Jambo was seen to be protecting the young lad from the other younger male gorillas) can be seen in this vast animal habitat.Over one hundred species of animals reside within the 42 acres of beautiful parkland and water gardens that make up Jersey Zoo. Many of these animals are among the rarest in the world. The Zoo is open every day of the year except Christmas day, and closes at dust. Visitors can picnic on the lawn or visit the Cafe.

Westmount Memorial

by Jasen71

This memorial was established on the site of former forced worker graves in Jersey. An annual memorial event is held on Liberation Day (9th May), which is also a public holiday.. A senior military official from the Russian Embassy attends together with representatives of official bodies representing those who suffered and the families of the deceased. A few surviving former slave workers still attend.

elizabeth castle

by bobsreturn2004

In fact everything i saw was brilliant, with the exception of a living legend.Elizabeth castle though is fantastic. You have two ways to get there, if the tide is out you can walk, if its in you have no option but to catch a peddle boat that takes people back and fore.I must warn you it is expensive! You have a brief view from the castle with the history of it dating back from 1561 when the castle was built by Sir walter Raleigh and whose guests have included Charles the 2nd and james the 2nd.The highlight is a 16th century march by a guard and the firing of the cannon of which can be done by members of the public! The castle boasts a fantastic resturant and 3 musems looking at the history of the cannon, the castle and to the local police. At the top is a disturbing scene of a 1940s german machine gun nest, the holders for the guns still in place.

Durell Wildlife Conservation trust

It is a fntastic zoo.Just the care they put into the enclosure..Of course if you try to breed endagered speciesone can expect some species that are not thatcommon in zoos. And he has a lot of those species. The thing is they are not always that interestingfor common visitors. What to think about a little sand lizard ina huge enclosure. You need some time tofind this little guy. You'll expect a huge comodo dragon , and then you find this little...That is a parth of the endagered story as well , would an enimal get extinct if people would find it beautifull and interesting?Don't worry there are enough animals that can be enjoyed. In the picture you can see the rarecelebes Macaques. And a you can see thebreeding part goes well. ;-) These animalshave got a huge enclosure to house alarge natural group. That is another interesting facet fo the zoo. It's surroundings. I bet a lot of care has...
