ONE OF THE 20 BEACHES....

by eden_teuling

Lying back on a nice sandy beach, with an occasional dip in the clear blue water can be one of the most relaxing ways to spend a holiday and then, yes, Jersey is the place to come.....The Island has no less than eight of Britain's 100 best beaches as featured in the Reader's Digest Good Beach Guide, produced by the Marine Conservation Society.these 8 are: Archirondel, Beauport, Bouley Bay, Green Island, Plémont, Portelet and St. Ouen ( The Watersplash and Le Braye ) these too are all noted as being exceptionally CLEAN.The one you see here is St. Brelade and it said to be the most BEAUTIFUL beach.....

JERSEY MUSEUM.....

by eden_teuling

Here too, the opening hours differ in winter and in summer.....which is understandable...A Busstop is near the Museum and also ample place to park your car....There is a restaurant and of course a NICE shop.Important is that it is accessible for handicapped people who want to visit the Museum...This Museum is the best spot to learn about the Traditions, Culture and History of Jersey. There are all kinds of original objects and with modern technology a lot is possible....After an investment of some 3.8 millions of Pounds the museum was re-opened in 1992 and immediately chosen THE BEST NEW ATTRACTION FOR TOURISTS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.The most important collections are together in the exhibition THE STORY OF JERSEY.Here is e.g. a reconstruction of an archeological site LA COTTE to be seen and an interactive computers presentation. The Barreau-Le Maistre Art Gallery has a collection of...

This is a wonderful watermill, situated in a fine spot....You can park you car there (no pay) and there is also a bus connection. Thanks to the HERITAGE LIST of Jersey this wonderful watermill was restored to its former beauty and is working again.Visiting this place you will get to know exactly how it works because they will give you a brochure with detailed descriptions. There is a NATIONAL TRUST SHOP with a nicely varied offer of all kinds of high quality gifts and presents .....When you have seen the Mill, have had some fresh hot tea or something else and have bought some fine souvenirs you can go for a relaxing, refreshing walk in the adjacent woods......fine outing for a perfect afternoon!Pay attention to the opening hours, they differ in Summer and Winter....

HAMPTONNE COUNTRY LIFE MUSEUM.....

by eden_teuling

For most Islanders home was not a castle bur a cottage of sorts....At the HAMPTONNE COUNTRY LIFE MUSEUM you can visit the homes of ordinary Islanders, a medieval dwelling, a 17th Century House, an early 19th Century Farmhouse and Victorian outbuildings, preserved and restored using traditional crafts.Jersey has a fascinating past which is also brought to life in THE STORY OF JERSEY exhibition at the JERSEY MUSEUM.

GROSNEZ CASTLE.....

by eden_teuling

GROSNEZ castle is younger than MONT ORGUEIL castle, by about a hundred years, but has aged less well.In fact it was more or less dismantled in the 15th Century, though there are still some ruins to be seen. The 3rd castle is the ELIZABETH CASTLE and it became the Island's main stronghold in the 1590s.It was named after queen Elizabeth I by Sir Walter Raleigh, whem he was Governor of Jersey. The castle contains exhibitions explaining its role in the Island;s history, so I would advice you to go there.....

SOME MORE, OK ?

by eden_teuling

AN ISLANDER'S HOME...Part of Normandy, ruled by England, lost to France but choosing England again, no wonder the Island always had to defend itself. The fact that if has 3 castles within 45 square miles shows just how well-prepared the Islanders were....MONT ORGUEIL CASTLE is a Medieval STRONGHOLD: work on the castle as we see it today began in the 13th Century. It dominates the east coast and was the first line of defence against the FRENCH.Signposted paths lead visitors around the well preserved castle and grounds.

SOME HISTORY......FALDOUET DOLMEN

by eden_teuling

A very interesting place to visit!!!The Island of Jersey has a story to tell which stretches back from WW II and the Occupation to more that 250.000 years ago. It is a rich heritage, which is not only well preserved but also well-presented at fascinating historical sites and in excellent, award-winning museums. When Palaeolithic mam left the remains of his meal in a cave at La Cotte de St. Brelade, 250.000 years ago, Jersey wasn't even an Island. But about 8.000 years ago changing sea levels isolated Jersey from the mainland of France, just before the Neolithic farmers arrived.Their most impressive legacy and one of Europe's finest prehistoric Monuments is LA HOUGUE BIE. Dating from 3.500 BC. the site contains a huge burial mound and passage grave - as well as two medieval CHAPELS which continued the religious significance of the site for nearly 6.000 yearsFaldouet Dolmen, built around...

THE GERMAN UNDERGROUND HOSPITAL.

by eden_teuling

It is now over 50 years that Jersey was liberated from GERMAN occupation at the end of the Second World War.However, no one is ever likely to forget those 5 years as reminders are scattered throughout the Island. As well as turning Jersey into a concrete fortress, with fortified positions constructed all around the coast, the occupying forces undertook the construction of a massive underground complex, which eventually became the German Underground Hospital.Taking 3 years to build with forced labour, the Hospital covers almost a kilometre of tunnels and chambers dug through solid rock.Displays, models and a unique atmosphere now make this one of the most emotive museums you will ever visit! There is space to park your car, you can go there by bus 8/8a.There also is a shop and a self-service restaurant.
