Driving in the Island

by Tea4Two

Hiring a car in Jersey is easy to arrange and at very competitive rates – even petrol is slightly cheaper than in the UK. Visitors must hold and bring with them a valid driving licence. The maximum speed limit is 40mph/64kms. In addition, through some built up areas and dangerous junctions a 20mph and 30mph restriction applies. There are also Green Lanes with a 15mph limit. "Filter in Turn" means just that - take your turn with other vehicles in joining or crossing a stream of traffic.Payment for parking in the Island is by paycard and wherever the symbol is displayed. The paycard can be purchased in advance from Post Offices, garages and shops displaying the paycard symbol but not in the car parks themselves. In some roads on the outskirts of St. Helier parking is free, but controlled by parking discs -obtainable from the Town Hall. A disc or paycard is not required from 5pm to 8am...

Car, Bicycle, Boat ..... or by Foot

by Tea4Two

As Jersey is small there are many alternatives to getting around.Bearing in mind the roads are perhaps much narrower than you may be used to, make sure you go for a small hire car like a Fiesta or Metro. You can hire bicycles and cycle on the "green lanes" where you have the priority over the cars. This is not for the faint hearted as there are a lot of ups and downs!!A boat trip is a nice thing to do and this is normally along the south coast of the island.Walking is great exercise especially along the coastal walks.

Getting lost !

by ATLC

The only time I ever had a row with my beloved about the route was in Jersey!Yes, on this tiny island we actually got lost. It was raining and misty. I was driving on the unfamiliar "wrong" side of the road. No road sign to show the way...LOL.... it turned out to be a funny holiday memory!

ABOUT THE GREEN LANE.....

by eden_teuling

St. Peter and St. Lawrence (and more parishes now, I suppose) have something special: THE GREEN LANE.Roadsigns show where these lanes start. It is a Green Lane Network where walkers, cyclists and horses have right of way!Cars are allowed to drive 15m/ph and are being discouraged to use these green lanes.Where these Green Lanes are can you see on the map that you can buy for 1 pound at the VISITORS' CENTRE . The highroads go from north to south but most narrow ways are paths and ways winding all over the island and can be very surprising!Enjoy them!

FLYING OR SAILING TO JERSEY IS SO EASY!!

by eden_teuling

Jersey being an island (one of the Channel Island located west of France in the Channel) you have to go by AIR or FERRY , from the UK or from France (St. Malo e.g.)Once there you can either walk or hire a car.For so small an Island 14 x 8 square km. it has so much to offer to tourists whether they are very young, young, somwhat older or....already grannies.... There are 20 beaches, 153 km. where you can cycle safely and 116 square km. of beauty and history!I can recommend it to you. I am so lucky to have friends from the UK living there......which makes things easier for me.......

Getting Around

by steventilly

Car hire is fairly cheap on Jersey and the roads are pretty good. There is an Island wide limit of 30mph except on the one small strech of dual-carriageway between St Aubins & St Helier. In some places the limit is 20. That's not a problem, the island is small and you can get anywhere in a fairly short time. They drive on the left, like in the UK.Busses are good, cheap and fairly frequent, but they all centre on St Helier. So sometimes you have to go from A to St. Helier and then St Helier to B. And then back again... It's good using the busses if you're staying in the St Helier area.

Getting There

by steventilly

The easiest and quickest way is to fly. There are regular flights from all over the UK and europe. Jersey airport is one of the busiest in the UK, though due to it's size, it only handles fairly small planes. The other way is to come by ferry. This is obviously the ONLY way if you're bringing your own car! A fast catermeran runs from Poole to Jersey, taking about 4 hours. If the weather's bad be prepared for a nightmare journey, unless your guts are made of steel!

Ferry

by alectrevor

From the UK ferries go from Weymouth and Poole. From France Malo is the port.

Liberation Station

by jo104

All buses depart and arrive into Liberation station in St Helier. There is a helpful information desk as well as big boards displaying departure times. You need to wait at the gate until it opens.
